Companion for the companion!!
« on: January 29, 2011, 10:35:54 pm »
I kept the pygmy male kid born last December, castrated him, and as he had grown up with his dad (kid escaped into his dads pen most days) thought he would make  a companion for the pygmy billy .....who hates being on his own.  All was going well, but then Bobby was bullying little Barnie.  I moved him in with Poppy and Primrose the two white kids, who although three months younger, towered over Barnie.  Now they are bossing him too.  Barnie is tiny - not sure why, as his mum is not  a pygmy, and his full sister is not that small.  He is plump - just compact!  I stand  with his while he has his food, and put his hay  up on a ledge ......he seems to cope with the two bossy girls, but its not nice to see them chasing him.

I am now wondering whether to get Barnie a young friend - but do wonder if the bullying would happen again.  As far as I can see its just at feeding time the girls bully him, and like I said I make sure he gets his food, so he is not suffering through lack of food.  There is a bully in all my group of goats, but I think I worry about Barnie because he is so small.

would you like a friend for him?!
If and when Geraldine produces a girl, we are going to have to re-home my lovely baby Max.  he cant be milked you see!

mind you, he'd probably tower over Barnie, and he is like a fluffy barrel with legs at the moment - his parents have given him a heck of a winter coat!!

Cesar is a bully over food - Max cries and cries but actually, if you watch them, Ces has his fill & wanders off, and Max gets more than enough.  even separate buckets makes no difference...

If he's smaller than them make an area that only he can get into to feed
