The town fox you referred to was probably dumped there by the local hunt. They do that all the time so to make sure that they will have something to hunt.

We don't have a local hunt  8)  It's townies 'rehoming' town foxes.

Looking through some old emails recently, there was a local person saw an RSPCA van pull on to a disused pub car park, and released a fox (very rural, apart from local farms, you would need a vehicle to get there)
String of emails was relating to problems with a very bold fox, taking hens during the day. It was eventually dealt with by a local.

And that's the shame of it, isn't it! It's not the fox's fault for existing, it's the fault of those doing the release.  RSPCA indeed  :o
