My light Sussex cockerel Angus went for me tonight when I went to shut the birds up. He's normally very good never even shown a hint if aggression but he actually followed me round the back of the coop which I didn't think twice about and when I turned my back to check the bolts were shut on the back door he went for the back oft legs.. Little whotsit! I had to kick out at him to get him to back off 3 times he came at me. I did have to connect with him before he ran off inside which I'm unhappy about but had to defend myself. Is it likely that he's turning nasty or is this likely to be a one off do you think? I made sure I didn't back down and as I say he ran off but nevertheless it's concerning. One for the pot if he keeps it up..

If he is a wonderful cockerel and you want to keep him then I would suggest you corner him pick him up, and hold him tightly by the back of the comb whilst shouting a lot, and then throw him ignominously (but lightly so as not to hurt him) somewhere the hens can see his shame.

If his is less than wonderful I would suggest you eat him, as his somewhat aggressive genes will otherwise be perpetuted.  After many years of weeding out any aggression in my cockerels I have a lovely calm strain.

I do like him enough to give it a shot sue but if he does it again it'll be hasta la vista. Thanks for the advice.

Spring is in the air! I like a cockerel with a bit of something about him, only doing his job and keeps the strain strong I believe. I used to say they were aggressive but now protective and territorial are more the words I would use.Takes some guts to attack a human when you are only a foot high bird.I was attacked quite a few times by my turkey stag today, he was upset cause I was taking his old bedding out, he does not like anything to be removed from his space. Would you rather have a man about the place or a wimp.The only thing you must do is be assertive, ignore him and if he keeps attacking hold his head to the floor for a minute, it does work. Saying that a friend of mine had a cockerel that waited for her on a bridge she had to cross to get to her back door, it went for her once too often and she full thumped it and it went flying across the garden, never bothered her again.

I did womble but couldn't reply think it was locked or iPhone issues :-)) he looks fab I'm really pleased he's settled in so well. It's funny the arcana x he hatched with didn't make a sound til he went but boy has he found his voice since!

The red went down well over Xmas so cheers again for that :-))

we had a tiny bantam that came with some goslings once, she was evil really and would chase everyone   lol   we had got her for free, quickly realised why !!
dustbin lid for protection springs to mind.
