same here. i think its the poly boxs. we had some meat bird eggs sent in the post with anothe few folks and nearly everyone got 90% hatch rate. they used an outer box with a layer of foam shapes then eggs in the larger egg trays more foam more eggs and more foam. its still worth trying even if you only get 1 or 2 in each hatch with the more uncommon birds.

spent small fortune on OEPF eggs from breeder in south, (3x price of up here but couldnt find new bloodline,) one egg was golfball shaped so that was neva gona hatch anyway, we only got one chick so he was on his own, put him out with some older chicks for company but he escaped through gap and dog ate him. his name was gordon as in gorden-bennet-he-was-expensive!
had other sussex eggs that just went liquid. i ended up going down (7 hrs each way) to collect some live chicks from him cos really wanted that certain breed, and what u think was a breeder, was actually a shed in his tiny garden in middle of huge town. you'd have thought a decent breeder by advert and fone conversations, and actually really poor quality stock so will have to start again with that breed. nothing wrong with keeping chooks in back garden but just drawing attention to fact that adverts in magazines dont match up to reality if you actually visit them.

Most breeders with any pride in the birds they keep will have a web site to give you an idea of quality.

oh, posh adverts, posh website, great photos, posh prices, but reality very different. oh and he put price up when i arrived, am i supposed to say no when iv jus travelled 7 hrs and leave empty-handed??
on contrary, great lady down road from me, nothings posh but birds clean and healthy, good stock and good hatch rate, would recommend her to anyone cos she knows her stuff too. geniunely interested in poultry. no website tho - and neither do we, really must tho cos its expected nowadays.

Please leave rubbish birds with the idiot that wasted their time breeding them. By buying them you encourage them to breed more of the same and thats what has been the ruination of many of our traditional breeds.

There are some very dedicated breeders out there with good quality stock for sale at realistic prices all you need to do is find them.

Every bird you bring home is a potential time-bomb of disease so make sure it's worth the risk.
