Transport for sheep to mart
« on: July 18, 2022, 04:17:34 pm »
Im wanting to take a few sheep into market, normally when moving anything about we use the Berlingo van, but I've been told that would not acceptable for a mart.
Is this true? Only our own stock ever goes in, and abbatoir have never said anything?

The abattoir should officially be rejecting anything being unloaded without a ramp which meets the regs, and the mart may have no option but to enforce those.
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Thanks Sally, the abbatoir unloading area is luckily the same height as the van floor, and doors swing right open, so we reverse right up. So no problem and nobody said anything.
Obviously mart would be different.
Will have to find haulage. One already let us down. >:(

If you have a local Faceache Smallholder group, might be worth an ask if anyone would lend you a sheep trailer or drop them off for you?  (We see the odd request on ours, and they often seem to get an offer. I'd help, if it was ever anyone near to me.)

Hi
Have you tried phoning the mart and asking them directly? They’d be best placed to give you their specific requirements.
Best of luck with sorting it all out.

Probably because trading standards are often at the market, but not at the abattoir. The rules are the same for both (and technically all times you transport livestock). You’d need loading gates and a ramp.
