counting the days!!
« on: November 01, 2010, 08:53:01 pm »
our british saddlebacks go to the slaughter on the 20th of this month and i have to say they look
in good condition.
been the second time for us now to have pigs here and again this time i loved the whole day to day
rearing these great stock animals.
so just need to keep on top of things now and enjoy this last few weeks.

My 3 osb's went on Monday and I am missing them already, they too looked in good condition, I was very carefull with their feed and stuck to the recomended quantities even going so far as to weigh each feed out with only fresh fruit and veg as extras. They did eat masses of apples so should be tasty pork!
Now getting the ground tidied up before winter and ready for next springs new arrivals.

We got a large black x GOS carcass back this week.  Have just tried the meat, its definitely sweeter than pure GOS but not as porky tasting as pure LB.  An interesting cross we will be trying again.

I've not got any photo's, but I'll get hubby to take a couple before/during/after loading, depending on how it goes and how his stress level is - cos we've still got the big (he says 'evil'  ::)) one to tag  ;)
One looks like a GOS and the other 2 look like LB's, they were born on 30th April, so just over the 6 months but WAAAAAAY bigger than the last lot I had (saddleback crosses) who looked tiny compared to the others in the abbetoir. Mine have had about 1/3 of an acre to free range in and loads of fruit and veg, so although they're big, they look nice and lean - time (and butchery) will tell !
I'll try and post a pic tomorrow  ;D

Ooooh I'd love too!! But no! This year we had a huge amount of work done on the farm - new electrics in all outbuildings, water run to all fields, new gates put in, hay cut, stables built (the list is endless!). We really hit the jackpot and found that most of our neighbours were all in our needed area's of business. Some we are paying completely in pig and others are having half in part payment!

I've had 2 builders work 5 full days with use of all tools for one pig between them and various other deals we set up back in June!
