Shredded paper in nest boxes?
« on: May 06, 2020, 11:46:22 am »
I have lots of sensitive waste documents that I will shred. Can I use this as nesting box lining. Just wondering about the risk of paper cuts to hens feet??

I used it regularly fro a while but it gets very soggy and smelly, adn a nightmare to clean out and get rid of, even for composting.  I wouldn't use it as a long term solution but fine as a standby

We use it in the summer when the hens legs are dry. However, in the winter it does get rather soggy and squashed. I think the other advantage in the summer is that it is less attractive to red mite than straw is.

Interesting!

We now exclusively use shredded paper in the henhouse (not just the nestboxes). Hens' feet are tough, and I don't think paper cuts are an issue. Our coop has a droppings tray underneath the perches, so the deal is that the paper goes in the bottom of the coop to begin with, and then gets scooped up to the droppings tray,  :poo: ed on, and then scooped out of a side door, straight onto the compost heap / muck pile.

I finally got round to using the contents of the muck pile a few weeks ago, and it had all rotted down to lovely soil-like soft muck. You could actually see the line where we switched from wood shavings to shredded office paper, and I'd say the paper muck was better looking TBH. (oh dear, did I really just type that?).

BTW, a word to the wise - the muck we removed did have numerous little plastic bits in it, which I now realise were the shredded windows from junk mail envelopes. These clearly aren't compostable, so from now on I'll be ripping the windows out and binning them before shredding.

Thanks for all that. The lock down and consequent shortages here on our plot makes shredded paper the way to go!
If I have to review that in winter I will.
Great if composting it might work for us

I use it, with no problems although it does tend to stick to eggs more than straw does, not a deal breaker, just a pointless little fact ;D
