New here!
« on: October 04, 2010, 04:20:56 pm »
Hello!

Just thought I'd introduce myself as a new user here. Husband and I have just bought 4.5 acres of grazing land just north of Lewes, E. Sussex. All very exciting (especially as I grew up inner city!) and can't wait to 'get going' My daughter who is 3, wishes to turn it into something out of Big Barn Farm (Cbeebies for those familiar!) Planning on finding some pregnant sheep  :sheep: (and booked onto a sheepkeeping course!) getting a miniature horse  :horse: and keeping some ducks  :&> and chickens  :chook: just to see how we all settle in to life! We've a lovely area perfect to plant some fruit trees in.

It's knowing what to do first - no doubt will post so many Q's on here!! Anyone who knows of any pregnant sheep (what is the term please?!!) or a miniature horse please let me know, I'd also welcome any recommendations of local people to me who may help us with fencing, transporting etc etc.

Welcome to the forum, Melholly!  Can't help with sheep not horse as I'm hundreds of miles from you in Clackmannan, Scotland - but good luck with the new venture.

Please if you can buy two equines as they are herd animals.  I know they will befriend sheep etc. but sheep arent able to join in the mutual grooming, nor are their tales any good at swishing the flies from the ears and face which is what a companion horse would do.  Hope this makes sense.

Hello and welcome from southern Scotland where the wind is blowing but it's a lovely day.  Pregnant sheep are called 'in-lamb ewes'.

Hi and welcome from the Scottish Borders, I have a 3 yr old granddaughter who is a huge big barn farm fan and so far I have the horses, pigs, sheep, hens, ducks and turkeys but still no gobos. Just have to think of a good reason to have them.

Awww thanks everyone!

Hilarysmum - don't worry about the equine herd quest, I'm not so green with horses having kept thoroughbreds before!  ;) But thank you.

Daisysmum - we'd all love a gobo! So glad you get the Big Barn farm gig!

I feel welcome!!

Hiya! From north Wales.  Welcome to the site.  In lamb ewes become available usually around December/January or later as ewes normally go to the ram about now to November.  They are scanned to see if they are in lamb, if not scanned, then they are termed as have 'run with the ram' so are probably, but not definitely in lamb.  Keep an eye on the Marketplace thread on this site or local classifieds livestock section/smallholding magazines.    Or you could just try your local livestock markets. Good luck with everything!
