I meant to say, you can tell which are the dampest bales by lifting them. There is some variation in density and length, depending on how ancient your square baler is, but heavy bales will in general be wetter than light ones. Another way to tell if your bales are heating up is to insert a metal rod inside the bale and leave it for a minute, then feel the tip for temp (a broken tedder tine is ideal). You can use the same method to tell if your compost heap is getting hot inside.
