Land Management / Re: Lime

What is the PH currently?  You will need that info to decide whether reducing the acidity is viable and then if it's going to be effective to get rid of buttercups

Horses and grass don't seem to go together well, in my experience. Always end up with docks, buttercups and little else !

Not sure on local application of lime - generally used on the whole field to reduce acidity to encourage grass rather than sorrel etc

I'm sure others will be more helpful, in due course

Land Management / Lime

I have a lot of buttercups in my paddocks and i was wondering about buying bags of garden lime to treat small areas at a time. Reason being it would have to be when I am not grazing a paddock. The ponies do not get much grass over the summer but are given free range in the winter months. Is this a stuipid idea, would treating the ground with lime help.?

Marketplace / Wanted - half rare breed pig for August
« Last post by P6te on June 23, 2025, 10:27:06 am »
Looking to purchase half a rare breed pig fully butchered (we can supply a cutting list) around 20th August.  We prefer not frozen, we are based in South Derbyshire.  Does anyone have any that will be ready in this timescale?

Know this is a bit out of date, but others may be interested. I have dealt with Basons for years - as indeed did my father before me way back in the 60s. Had all sorts off him over the years -turkeys, ducks all sorts of hens, laying and fattening poultry. Never a problem. Delivery service is good as well.

Equipment / Weights for a solis with a flail mower???
« Last post by jaffab on June 22, 2025, 01:50:55 pm »
All,

I am looking to put a hedge cutter flail mower on my solis 26 compact tractor.
My tractor already has a bucket loader on the front.
When I add a flail mower (Butterfly 300), do I need to add counter balance weights on the front?
If so, how much do I need to add?
And how to attach them - the ones I see listed for a solis seem to bolt on the front (see 2nd pic) - which would restict the bucket loader movement.
The front of my tractor is as per the attached photo.
Any advice?

Poultry & Waterfowl / Re: Introduction of new hens

They may take a little longer to find their place within the pecking order. It sometimes takes as long as a month before new and old hens are fully settled with each other. Once the new hens come into lay the dynamic will almost certainly change. You could try taking the older two out for a few days and then re-introduce them, so they are the newbies. Another possibility is to spray all the hens with a weak vinegar and water solution so they all smell alike.

Poultry & Waterfowl / Introduction of new hens

We have recently purchased 4 Point of lay hybrids as our wee group of hens were down to 2! In the past we had a cockeral who kept the peace however our two older legbars are bullying the new girls especially the two small girls. We initially kept them apart before moving them into the night enclosure  the new girls still have their own little henhouse but when they come out the old girls chase them. It has only been a week shall we just let them sort it out or is there something else we can try. Sorry for long post!
