Going rate for Ram Hire?
« on: September 17, 2017, 07:21:14 pm »
Can anyone tell me the going rate for ram hire? I have had a neighbour approach me wanting to put around a dozen of his Scottish blackface ewes to my white wensleydale ram. He is proposing putting the ewes in with my ram on my land.

I charge £60 for a 4-week hire of a registered pedigree Southdown ram or ram lamb, but the ram goes to the ewes and is then quarantined and goes straight to market afterwards.  The rams are a service for small flocks that don't want the bother of one around all year, mostly folks that purchased their pedigree breeding stock from me in the first place.  Longer than that and the ram could lose condition, depending on how many ewes he's running with, and outside ewes on my land aren't acceptable as my flock is otherwise closed except for new rams every other year, all of which are quarantined for at least 6 weeks.

I wouldn't have his ewes on your land ... why do you need too?  ... that isn't ram hire .. its sheep tack plus use of ram .... and reduction in your (sheep) health status.  Are you going to use ram too?

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

Let go of who you are and become who you are meant to be.

Echo the others, I wouldn't have someone elses sheep on my land!

To come to a figure I suppose you could think of it backwards? How much do you think the Ram is worth, take the price you'll get for him as a cull off that price and add something for your time/hassle.
