topping grass

Hi, I'm new on here
I've just taken on a new croft with about 14 acres of in-bye ground which hasn't been used for a good number of years. It's all old grass with some weeds and patches of rushes caused by blocked drains(now cleaned and opened up).  I'm looking to used at least half of this for hay or silage this year and the rest for summer grazing. My question is and I admit it's maybe a bit stupid but is there a good or bad time to top these fields? I've got a topper with mulching blades and wondered if topping now would bring the fields into production intimate for the summer?

It would do no harm, I shouldn't think, as long as the ground is firm enough and you clear the mowings away.
