Title: I hope all Scots are not as stupid as this
Post by: kevkev57 on August 06, 2009, 08:52:27 am
Now I tread on thin ice, so thin you can see the water below it.

Even in full knowledge that there are a clan or three here.

To make matter worse its me an Englishman , in one swoop, generalizing and putting all Scots into the basket marked ' stupid '

Why oh why do I do this terrible thing ?

Read on.

In the office where my dear lady works is a man from Dundee.  I no longer refer to him by his real name, prefering to call him Mr stupid.

He recently did a trip to Scotland. Upon returning to work on Monday he started to feel ill. He phoned a doctor at 10.30am. The doctor has confirmed that in all probabilty he has swine flu. The fact that his brother in Dundee has it as well, does not help !

Then Mr stupid, goes back to the office, against the rules set in place for this flu. Walks around tells everyone who wants to hear that he has flu has been given tamiflu and will be off work for a while !  Luckily panic was setting in by the time he got to see my dear lady wife. She and two ther female friends went off to the ' rest room ' ( it is an American company ! ) until he had gone.

Ok, you can catch it on a train, but at the moment cases are very few and far between here , so his actions must be considered stupid.

I actually know that Scots are not all stupid, as you invented the phone, or was it a Englishman ?

Kevin

Kevin - no offence taken. Dundee is less than 15 minutes away by car from here and it is a scarey, scarey place. It does have some very nice parts but the general opinion of Dundee, in my opinion, is just as you described Mr Stupid. My niece was a Police Officer in Dundee and OMG the horror stories she could tell of some people's way of life!

But then what about the  stupid English people who went over to Mexico and brought it back on the plane even though they were feeling ill while they were there.  I don't think you can limit stupidity to one nation.  Oh, and by the way, we have a great programme on up here at the moment called Made in Scotland.  Believe me we Scots invented a helluva lot more than just the phone - that was Alexander Bell.

Wikipedia takes a humorous look at the list - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_inventions

Oh and strangely enough we didn't invent the bagpipes!

Oh, I think we DID invent those ;)
It is said to have been invented in the Haven Chip Bar in Stonehaven, near Aberdeen on Scotland's North-East coast, in 1995. The first recorded mention of the food was in the Daily Record, August 24, 1995, in an article titled "Mars supper, please".

I seem to have a dodgy stomach (nothing to do with this conversation, though it's not helping!) so all I'll be having is a wholegrain baguettine with some tuna mayo and see what happens.

Oh, and my garlic.... hmm, that's another thread.

Scotland is lovely, but its full of scotts!!!!

Actually, Scotland is lovely, but it's biggest fault is it's full of English.

They run the pubs, B&Bs, tourist shops, hotels, the tourist board, Scottish National Heritage, The National Trust for Scotland..........every time there is a report on rural affairs, or some story about education, or some dispute about a right of way, its a person from Englandshire who is interviewed.

All the programs on children's telly are fronted by English presenters...........even the news bulletins are being presented in an increasingly anglicised manner.

Radio Scotland was the only chance we had of keeping something to ourselves, but even that is now infiltrated by English news readers, and terminology such as 'Out of Doors' used as program titles.

It's actually a form of social engineering designed to keep Scotland for the English.

Given the number of Swine-flu cases in Englandshire by comparison to those in Scotland, I would hazard a guess that there are some residents of this unfortunate island who are more stupid than us Scots. Our stupidity seems to be limited to our keeping the border open between our country and that of the auld enemy.  ::)

Plus the first corner shop I ever went into in Edinburgh was ran by a very scottish speaking indian man!!! and that was over 20 years ago - he definately was not english ;D ;D ;D

Anyhow I think the scots and the irish are the same peoples - my maiden name was Kilbride, and most of my relatives are from Southern Ireland but I can copy the scottish accent perfectly and feel just as much at home there as I do here - even though I was born in England.

Best to be British me thinks ;D ;D ;D Julie x

AO - now, that's it for me, my OH has lived here for nearly 30 years and still has to listen to exactly that racist Cr..! Some people actually just live here because they like it and most of the people here and not to be in a position of power or to oppress the poor Scots.  Get over it - the SNP has done so much for your cultural confidence, do you still need to hang on to this generalized historically rooted racist attitude?

Its amazing really - the true scottish and the true irish blame the english for what happened in the past - especially with landlords who were given land by royalty and treated the commoners, peasants, working class, or general public, whichever you prefer to call them,
Like utter rubbish, taking peoples girls before the wedding and the lord having them first was ghastly and all the other things were too, dreadful.

BUT - what they don't know or realise - is they also did all that stuff to the English people too. :'(

Once everyone realises this, and clubs together their votes - we might even beat them - just like the wonderful scottish beat Maggie with her silly poll tax  ;)

It is royalty and the system of giving out land for favours at that time that was wrong, not the general folk trying to bring up families, pay taxes and live their life - we all suffered by the hands of those in charge :'(

Russ - Nothings changed - bl88dy Hell - it all happening again >:(

Not safe Russ- keep your head down a little longer ::)

Hello Hillary - I can understand that feeling...

People here in Eire always assume I am English because of my accent - I cannot do the Irish accent - the scottish one comes naturally, but I tend to be stuck with the Yorkshire slant when I speak.

More than being European though -
When people say where are you from I would love to reply   "Oh my god were from the same place - Planet Earth - we are both the same - Humans - We both cry the same, 'We both laugh the same, we both bleed -
lets get on and stop looking for differences to judge people on"  But the people that usually ask these questions are looking for a difference to latch on to.

Problem is - most people want to argue, fight, be judgemental and put everyone into little pigeon holes labelled by religion, sex, age, where your from, what you have done or not done, which school you went to, what you wear, how you speak, and so on - sure you know the picture

I believe the following is quite true..

Judge lest ye be judged - Fix your own self and look deeply - you won't have time to judge others, you will want them to be your friends because you will find honesty, humbleness, forgiveness, humility and best of all TRUE LOVE

Julie

Actually, the Asian communities in Scotland have a sense of community and integration which is, sadly, lacking in many of our other immigrants. They (the Asians) have little desire to change everything (when was the last time you saw a cow in the road in Glasgow ;)), and they are generally friendly, and tolerant of our quaint Scottish ways.

You are, of course, correct when you point out the similarities between the Irish and the Scots. The main difference is that the Irish fought long and hard, and will do so again, to resist English rule, whilst the Scots just seem to accept it being done by the back door.

It's actually laughable when the Arbroath people get all animated on the subject of the Declaration of Arbroath, getting dressed up to mark the anniversary of the famous rag......you know, the one which declares to all and sundry, and the pope of the time, that "as long as one hundred of us remain alive, we will never succumb to English rule"...................Arbroath must be the only place in the country where it's believed that we don't still live under the dark cloud which is England, despite having a re-emergence of our own Parliament after 300yrs of servility.

I've no doubt that the English would love the Scots to forget all about the 1000 years of oppression, and our fight for a basic freedom to live our lives, within the confines of our tiny plot of land, without being constantly invaded  by our covetous and base neighbours.

Strangely enough, the English who still live in England are beginning to realise what it may mean to lose their national identity, even if they missed the fact that they had one in the first place ;D, and are now beginning to think that they may, perhaps, wish to keep a little bit of good old Blighty for themselves, as they see it being slowly taken away from them by incomers. Maybe the intensifying English sense of nationality will be the saving of Scotland by some perverse quirk of fate.

The French have the rights of it, I think, when they refuse to employ non-indigenous persons.

I don't want to be British................not when I see how the English, under the umbrella of 'Brits', behave in other peoples' countries.  :o::)

Shades of being tarred with the same brush, I fear. ;)

What happens in Englandshire is for the Englanders to decide............not really a problem which gives me much grief. ;)

Not read all the posts but surely the world is so small and we all can and will move around for various reasons, so why dose that make any one bad, or become a target of prejudice.
If you are wanting to change your way of life, have better oppertunites, are fleeing violence or  prejudice, how can that make you bad?
And why if you are born in any country, do people think you have certain traits that are not as good as them?
It is a brave decision to leave the place of your birth especially when you move into another country where many people do not make you welcome. My only gripe is people not contributing to the economy and claiming benefits, whether they come from the country they are claiming benefits from or from another country.
With regard to ruling a country, a true politition, voted for by the public, should do whatever benifits the country, simple, they either do or don't.
I judge people on how they are to me, not where they come from. Horrid people come from the earth, thats where I come from too!!!!!!!
HATE PREDJUDICE.......and excuse me if this does not make sense, I am really itchy due to being out clearing the garden and cleaning the pond...little bugs should bug off to another country  ;D ;D ;D ;D

This thread makes really entertaining reading  :D

I can't really add too much, being that i'm pure bred Scottish & my partner is English/Maltese.

There's loads of banter within the house & she's even started to read up on Scots history as she was schooled in England... just to get both sides of the story, which isn't a bad thing.

This thread could have easily broken out into WW3, but has remained friendly throughout.

To answer the origional question, no, we're not all stupid, just some of us are a wee bit thoughtless at times... thankfully it's just a select few.

Hi Julie, the reason people in 'Eire' think you're English is not just your accent. I knew you were English when I first saw your post. Why? Because nobody in Ireland says Eire (while speaking in English). But it doesn't matter a damn. Many of my neighbours are English-born and on one evening in Kinvara there was a great session in the pub and all the musicians were English. The American tourists didn't notice the difference.
We (Mrs Muc and I) often dream of moving to Spain. We say that the first thing to do is to really become fluent in the language but I think it is impossible to fully integrate across a language barrier. There are always little nuances which will make the locals laugh. We have a German neighbour who has lived here for 20 years and still speaks with a very strange mix of accents. And even though our children were born here in the rural west of Ireland, we (Mrs Muc and I) will always be 'blow-ins', coming as we do from the big city of Dublin 150 miles away.

I'm Scottish by birth and by choice. Dan is English by birth but chooses to live here - he knows I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I don't think there is anything wrong with being proud of your country, county, town, street, home, family, self - so long as it is a positive thing. In fact a bit more pride wouldn't be a bad thing ie taking a pride in what you do. Knocking other folk / places is pointless and negative.

I'm not a European - hate the EU, which has been foisted on us. Look forward to Scotland going it independently - and I wouldn't have said that a few years ago - if anyone ever bothers to ask us.

So...how far back do we go into our family history to have those certain stereotypical traits! and if a family moves from another country and has a baby somewhere else, is that child going to take on the stereotypical traits of the
country they move to? I can see how, small comunities had their different ways etc, but they get watered down through years of intregration, we all take bits from different cultures, you have only to look at a lot of young people who take the "Black American Hoody" look, walk talk and music, I find it amusing, particularly when I worked in Children's Units and locally born children were talking in patwa!!! ;D ;D

Like chickens and probably other animals, we choose to mix with like and familiar, that does not make us racist, just wanting to reflect our views on others with similar views, and by the look of this forum, if we want a row we choose to wind up others not so similar to us and talk of our differences.......we need differences as otherwise life would be boaring and most of us could trace our ancesters to other countries unless of course we have a weak genetic line and are  ::)"inbreeds"!!!!!!

Born on the continent, I culturally do feel definitely as a European . Nothing to do with politics, most of what comes out of Brussels is nonsense - for all the different countries! Some idiots tried to create something like the US artificially here, without the countries having a strong bond like in the States ( so it could never work, but nobody asked the population of Europe). Having gone that far now, though, (imposed or not), the Euro in all countries would improve a  lot of things....I love Scotland and do care a lot about local issues, otherwise I wouldn't be here!  :&>

Hiya northfifeduck

The english do not want euro one reason is because they do not want to lose the queens currency ::) ::)

IF ONLY the Welsh and Scottish would go euro and surround them with the stuff,
we might get them to give in ;D ;D ;D

I'm pretty sure the Eurobank would print a pic of HM onto the coins,  ;D every country has some sort of special features on their money - same difference  ;D

I am Treasurer for a National dog club and I have to go cap in hand to the Bank to get English notes for the prizes - even people getting our notes for nothing don't want them  ;) ;D ;D ;D

To me a currency is here to make my life easier. After years of travelling, I no longer have any sentimentality for the ' pound ', or anything else where sentimentality over rules practicallity.

I personally do not think the UK will adopt the euro for a long long time, if ever.  To be truthful I could not care less, and nor I suspect does the majority on mainland Europe. If the UK is happier keeping the pound, then thats cool as well. It might turn out to be the right thing, who knows.

All I know is that my life is a lot easier with one currency here. Living on the border of France, and not too far away from Germany and Holland.

It is a new currency and for the most part stable, defying the doom and gloom merchants that wanted to see it fall.

The queens head could be shown on one side of a euro coin by the way.  The Belgian euro for example shows the kings head.

Most currencies are.  I wish I had enough skills for bartering!

I personally LIKED all European currencies better than the Euro - from the look of them.  The designer must have been in a stupid world of his own, but hey, you only buy stuff with them, not frame them to look at!

Bartering's great here in Fife. I used to be a member in a LETS group and now do a bit of food bartering in the North Howe Transition Town food group. It's so much fun! As I still didn't get any courgettes from my own garden I bartered some chutney and jam and got so many in exchange that I can now make pickles and pre cook about 4 meals! You've got eggs, Annie! You could offer advice about keeping birds, breeding dogs, offer dog sitting maybe... :&>

Hello all
Just returned from a week's holiday on an isolated island off the west coast of scotland. 20 of us friends together for a week - fabulous!!!!! 2 people came down with swine flu, One from England and one from Glasgow. Missed the forum and enjoyed logging on tonight to see what you had all been chatting about.

Dundee is my local city and I love it - grit and all - after all you can't get a good egg without some grit. As for stupid Scot with swine flu - perhaps he needed some reassurance from his pals that he was going to be ok. He was irresponsible going back into work, but many of us are, when we are scared.
Also would not like to be branded as stupid cos someone with the same nationality is daft. We would all be dammed regardless of where we came from.
By the way, both holiday pals recovered well and we all became a little less scared of the big 'PANDEMIC"
P.s Have never fancied a deep fried mars bar - but there's nothing like an Aberdeen Buttery and a mug of milky coffee.
