My new puppy. I've finally managed to get a picture when she is not on the go.
She is 9 weeks old, is as good as house trained as she hasn't made any mess indoors. Comes when you call her name, and comes like a bullet when you whistle her. I think this girl is from true working stock, nothing seems to worry her not even loud bangs and especially not her big new sisters & brother.
Dad is Dargdaffin Gismo of three Valleys with Drakeshead bloodline as well and Mum has Dargdaffin four generations back. Both with excellent health results Dad 0/0 hips.
I think she is going to be one good dog. (That's my opinion for what its worth) :innocent:
Her name is Native American and means dark Fox.

Oh, she is pretty, what a beautiful colour
I'm impressed she comes when called or whistled already!
I've just rescued a 9 month golden retriever. Been in a loving, but totally clueless family in London, never had a pet before let alone a dog. She does not come when she's called. Or do anything else a pup should know. Am working on it, and looking for gundog training when we've got the basics sorted out - she tracks well instinctively.
-
I've got Golden Retrievers as well. One can be very stubbon, will do what you want eventually, but in her time. They need to be kept occupied so gundog training or even agility. Have you considered taking her to dog training classes for help with the basics.

She is beautiful  . A lovely fox red.
Did you get her from Three Valleys? Her father is their "Charlie" ..... unless I'm confused.

I've just emailed Ingrid Grayling (http://ingrid-grayling.com/) to see what she's got, ideally while I'm at home for the summer. My SIL is a dog behaviourist (unfortunately in Sydney,) and stuff I've learned from her, plus my natural inclinations, push me towards positive training, not aversive - so some 'village hall puppy classes' would just make me cross.
Got the clicker response set up, a recall in easy circumstances, made big progress with the resource guarding - she's doing pretty well having only been here 5 days, including adjusting from a townhouse in London to a smallholding, with other dogs etc. in Cumbria
Is Tokala going to be a gundog or just a pet? That photo makes me smile every time I look at it - she is such a cuteness

She is a very pretty pup, certainly got the working look about her
-
Ohhhhh she's GORGEOUS.

No I didn't get her from Three Valleys, but Charlie was the stud dog and he is one hansom dog. He is a Dargdaffin dog, three valleys was added to his name when they purchased him.

shes gorgeous, i love labradors.

Oh Karen, she is absolutely lovely
-
I saw a pic earlier and think she is stunning, she would complete my beautiful pack of Labs, One Black, One Yellow and One Chocolate...so a Fox red would be fab...especially Tokala :innocent:
-
You can't have her Sandy, she is all mine. ;D
-
Arh well.....we may have one, who knows

Isn't it the blacks that carry the yellow gene? Put a look alike on your Christmas or Birthday list.
I know Tokala's Dad, Mum, Mums sister and two puppies from her previous litter are all this lovely Red colour.
I had a labrador for my 21st birthday many years ago and his name was Rusty, hence the colour. It has taken me a life time to find another like him. :)
Today we have been working on recall with gundog whistle :fc: she is really good, just flat out now with the other dogs.

how do you breed a red labrador? what colour are the parents or is it just chance?
-
Our Black female had a yellow dad and the stud dog also had yellow, so she did have yellow and black pups, the chocolate one we mated with the same stud as he is such a wonderful and healthy dog, she had all black to our surprise so this time we have mated her to a chocolate male and fingers crossed we should get chocolate, she happens to be an excellent gun dog that is admired buy a few gun people, the stud is also a gun dog so we aim to train a pup up from scratch ...they are so easy to train, the hardest thing and I must admit I have not pursued it for a while is the stay put command, they tend to come back to me all the time!! I love to see working dogs!

According to the Kennel Club there is no Red Fox Labrador. The colour is yellow.
Tokala's parents are both the same colour along with her Mum's sister and two girls from a previous litter. All her litter mates were this beautiful colour. I have seen litters with both black and this dark yellow colour how it comes about i don't know, but I'm sure there is someone on here that does.
Have attched a picture of Mum, Mum's sister & two girls from a previous litter.

They're a bonny line-up

Such a gorgeous colour and she has a lovely face. Our pure lab is a very light colour. I know the official term is yellow but I refer to him as blond. He has a blond nature as well.

Quite complicated if you go into it.
I think there are 2 different genes responsible. Black (B gene) is dominant over brown (b gene). So
BB - black dog
Bb - black dog
bb - brown dog ... chocolate
One gene from each parent and so 2 Bb black parents could throw chocolate pups, a chocolate dog to a black dog (Bb) could throw black or chocolate and a chocolate lab to a black dog (BB) will only throw black pups.
Fox red is at one end of the possible colour range for "yellow" labs. If I remember correctly the yellow colour is controlled by a different eee gene which may switch off the bbb gene in some situations ... I think if they carry double ee. Can't recall in detail.
Similar in Flat coated retrievers, where black is dominant over liver colour. Flatties occasionally produce yellows. These are not recognised by the breed.
Phew.

I love the red fox ones. Have you seen the silver ones? A dilute of the chocolate I think and only in American lines?
-
BB - black dog
Bb - black dog
bb - brown dog ... chocolate
so would Bb x Bb give 1 chocolate(bb) and 3 blacks (BB, Bb, Bb) in a litter of 4? or do you have to have bb x bb to get chocolates?
-
Bb black mum
B b (alleles (genes) the mum could give the puppies)
B BB Bb both these puppies are black
Bb
Black
Dad b bB bb the left puppy is black, the right puppy is chocolate
So you were quite right, that mating gives, on averae, 3 black puppies and one chocolate one, per 4 pups.

 As Jaykay says.

We hope to get chocolate this time as both stud and bitch are chocolate and most of their line is, why is it not advised to mate chocolate with yellow? Not that we want to.
I never got the genetics, and its fascinating, a friend wanted me to use her stud dog, he is from the same stud breeder but carries yellow and had a chocolate mum although he is black, we did not want to chance it but we will see!!
