Title: Beware of unexpected visitors when slipping into complacent routines.
Post by: MAK on June 17, 2013, 10:10:04 pm
It is very very rare that we have anyone come to the house. We generally finnish our chores at 6;30 ish and on Saturday I was digging about in a collapsed south facing wall ( significant point here) - in recent times we have cooled off in the pool. Last night it was skinny dipping as it was aq bit warm.
But tonight the OH opted for a bath whilst I cooked. An elderley neighbour appeared at the open back door and asked for my help.
She had been eating her supper when she felt something around her feet. Although she has poor sight she suspected it to be a snake.
By the time I inspected her kitchen the snake was in the middle of the floor but by the time I got Chris out of her bath to deal with is the snake was in a corner hissing away and a bit annoyed. A big bugger - about 4 foot so quite old.

Moral of the story - never eat your supper with the door open on a hot day when snakes are about and secondly never assume that you have complete privacey when you are in your garden cooling down.   :innocent:

What species was it? There's a big stripy one that eats other snakes, I recall

A bit different from having a cat or dog around your feet I suppose...

:o I don't actually mind snakes .....but not in my kitchen.  Not quite sure what I would have done -probably shut all the doors and run.......

I hate them so much I sat the old lady in the garden and got Chris out of the bath to deal with it. It was too big for a viper or asp and was not a western whip snake. She thinks it was a very old grass snake but it was lively on the rake and at the time we did not think of taking photos.

I think they have smooth snakes over there - I remember seeing one, I think.

I love snakes, dunno why, I used to spend hours looking for/poking at adders on the heath when I was a kid.

"Knicker elastic"  :innocent:
the other week we stood having a chat - she had large wood ants crawling up her leg but did not feel them - not knowing the French for "wood ants" I simply brushed them off her leg. She seemed happy and offered me coffee  despite not knowing why I touched her leg. ;D

:roflanim: , hope she did not drop her biscuit crumbs down her top like I do...then should would think you were after more than coffee.
We keep a B& B/guest  house, I nipped to the toilet last night but left the door open, one of our guests passed the open door and said "good night" I just got up quick but not too embarresed, after all, we all have to wee!!
