Hi everyone. You may remember the successful campaign TAS members ran to save the rare breeds collection at Palacerigg Country Park back in December. You gave us wonderful support :bouquet: and some TAS members joined a new group - Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds - to offer continued support for the animals. The staff at Palacerigg have come up trumps and decided to hold an Easter :bunny: Event to celebrate and re-launch the rare breeds collection, and Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds have been asked to lend a hand. The event will take place over Easter itself, from April 22nd to 25th. For anyone in the area this will be a great family event but hopefully more TAS members will be able to join Friends of.... and come along to lend a hand.
I am waiting for copy from the organiser to put this information on the website www.palacerigg.weebly.com (http://www.palacerigg.weebly.com) and I will let you all know when it's up. The website itself still has a way to go before it is fully populated - but I'm working on it ;D
So please carry on helping this excellent showcase for our rare farm livestock breeds, the only one in the south of Scotland, by joining the Friends and lending a hand at the Easter Event.
Anyone who is already a Friend but didn't get my direct mailing today, please let me know.
:sheep: :cow: :horse: :goat: :pig: :chook: :&>
-
I have the last night of a training course earlier that week - but not sure if I'll be in the area or York for a few days after that yet. If I'm here, I should be able to help in some way or other.
-
I've emailed my daughter to see if we will take the children there in the Easter Holidays. Looking forward to it
-
Just as a coincidence, The Herald magazine is featuring Palacerigg Country Park as it's 'walk of the week' - 5.5 miles of woods and views :)
-
I'll do my best to come along,
John
-
Thanks Fergie
We really need as many helping hands as we can get - I think they are expecting great things from us but so far we are only a handful :(
-
I'll definately be there ;D
And I know where some of you live - so if you don't make an appearance I'll come knocking :o ;D ;D ;D
-
Thank you Karen  It will be great having your enthusiasm there :) I think it will be great fun for everyone. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to help visitors to the park to understand the importance of farm livestock, especially the older breeds, to members of the public - who are interested and want to know more.
So come on - please lend a hand, even just for half a day. Most of us will have a bit to travel, but it's worth it for this cause. I think I will take my spinning wheel too as that always sparks some interest.
:horse: :cow: :pig: :sheep: :chook: :&>
-
Can you remind us of the date please - and opening times.
-
Hi Doganjo - did you get the email I sent you direct a few days ago with more info about the Easter Event? What's the verdict from your daughter? I hope you will all be able to come and help.
The dates are April 22 - 25th. I don't know the times for sure yet but I expect it to be 0900 to 1630. As soon as I hear back from the organiser I will post further details here.
The Walk from The Herald I mentioned before can be viewed here:
www.heraldscotland.com/.../the-walk-palacerigg-country-park-1 (http://www.heraldscotland.com/.../the-walk-palacerigg-country-park-1) Just in case you are feeling energetic - it will be lovely in this dry weather we are getting.
-
Yes, got email, thanks, just asked dates reminder for others to see. That link to herald doesn't work.
-
Try this link.

What kind of a hand are they looking for? I'd help in principle but don't do anything as interesting as spinning to entertain or inform folk and could probably only get through one day so not sure what I could do?
-
Just by being there you'd be a massive help :) And don't worry that it would only be 1 day, even half a day is better than nothing at all ;D
You could explain why rare breeds are different to commercial breeds, how important they are or just be a smiling face to encourage people to sign up for the friends of Palacerigg group - your help would be very greatly appreciated :)
If you can pm your email address to either myslef or Fleecewife we'll add you to the emails and send you details.
Many thanks,
Karen x
-
Rosemary and I hope to get some help organised by discussing this at our committee meeting tomorrow evening.
-
Is that for the central smallholders group? That would be excellent if you can find support there too :). I shall ask the Biggar area group as well. As Karen has pointed out, there's something for eveyone to do. You don't need any special skills, just a smiley face :) and it will be a great chance for TASers to meet for a gossip ;D
:cow: :goat: :pig: :horse: :chook: :sheep: :&> :D
So that's Palacerigg Country Park Easter Event April 22-25 - come along and join the Friends of Palacerigg Rare Breeds to support this re-launch of the animal collection.
We made it happen ;D
-
We might be able to come along too- it's not far from here at all. Could probably bring some leaflet stuff and display boards regarding goats if you think they would be welcomed? I don't have much related to purely rare breed info though.
Beth
-
We are thinking along those lines too, and a few of us will definitely be along at some point over the weekend, we are also going to publicise it on our website
-
Beth - yes please ! Anything you can bring to boost our profile/display would be much welcomed (and it gives us the chance to meet face to face too ;D) :-*
Annie, thanks so much :-* :-* :-*
We'll be in touch, once we've got a plan ;)
Karen x
-
I think on of our committee members is going to take a run over in the next few days to suss it out as few of us have been there. HOWEVER! We discovered tonight that our Chairman's Dad was a ranger there 40 years ago or so, and he was born and brought up at Palacerigg! How's that for a coincidence!
-
Hi Annie - that is amazing ;D
When your committee member goes for the sussing out expedition, remind her/him to do the long walk and see the main flocks/herds of animals (take binoculars ;D). There are a few of each type close to the visitor centre, but most are further away. I think the tups are still in with the ewes, at least for the Soays - big disruption when they thought they were to be closed so everything is now out of sync. Looking forward to comments and ideas after the visit. Oh and no chickening out at the aerial walkway - I did it 8) ;D
-
Just a wee bump up for this ;)
Does anyone have any ideas of activities that would appeal to kids, not take too long (or cost too much) to organise and is 'Easter AND animal' themed, the obvious one is an egg hunt, but I suspect this is probably happening already.
Get your thinking caps on please (my brain is frazzled !) ;D ;D ;D
-
An Easter Egg shy instead of a coconut one. With mini eggs for prizes
-
photograph parts of animals and get the children to identifythe parts/animals concerned
name the piglet/lamb/chicken or calf etc 100 names on a sheet £1 per go winner gets £15 or £10 first and £5 for second
-
Great ideas Lillian - many thanks ;D
Anyone else got any more ideas ( or offers of help ;))
Thanks in advance folks
Karen :-*
-
A lucky dip always goes down well. Just small gifts/prizes- you can wrap them or not just as you please, shake them up in a Hessian bag of sawdust. 50p a go
-
That's a good one Annie (as was the egg shy too, sorry I missed it ;)) except we might mix it up a bit and have some dirt and leaves - and the possibility of worms :o :D) just so it really appeals to all the little boys ;) ;D ;D ;D
-

Oops, sorry just pm'd you now if not too late - can come over the Friday if you're still needing bodies rather than actual knowledge/skills ;)
-
Hi ellied - that will be wonderful - thank you :). We definitely need bodies as not many have signed up yet, but there are still six weeks to get organised and I'm hoping to get lots more volunteers by then.
I will go up next week to find out more details of how it will all be organised, and am still waiting to hear how many from RBST Caledonian have signed up. I will email you the more detailed info I sent out earlier.
Thank you 8)
-
Hi All . It's getting near to the date for the Palacerigg Easter Event April 22-25 now so we need to firm up numbers of those who can come along to help.
So far we have RBST Caledonian bringing a stall plus posters etc and a person to man it for one day (sorry, I don't know who is coming). I will do my best to do two days on the stall. There is a possibility of another person coming for the 4th day on the stall - it really needs at least one person each day who can enthuse about rare breeds, but more would be wonderful :). Then we have cmorrell and his camera, hopefully, HH, doganjo, Fergie, ellied (Fri), ballingall, and two members of the Biggar Area SmallHolderrs (BASH) - all of these to help in the general areas and only some confirmed.
Have I missed anyone out or does anyone want to be added in - it's not your last opportunity but it would help to know just who is coming when. Is there anyone from CSSH?
I am going up shortly so will hopefully see where it's all to happen and I will pass on any info.
:sheep: :horse: :&> :cow: :chook: :pig: :goat:
-
Me an HH are members of CSSA, I might take Sandy (and Steve unless he's working ) with me if she's free as I think my daughter will be busy - about to move house - so don't know which day till nearer the time.
-
This one got a lot of replies quickly! Yes I will be taking husband and kiddies, we are all rbst members but not friends int he formal sense but will love to come along. goosepimple
-
Hi Goosepimple - the Friends has only just been set up so please do become one. Just tell me or Happy Hippy and we'll sign you in. If you are coming along as a family do you think you would be able to help out a bit too? I can send you more info if you like. Do you live close to Palacerigg? :&> :horse: :sheep: :cow: :chook: :goat: :pig:

That's great doganjo :) :) Maybe you can co-ordinate with HH too so you don't both come on the same day. Did the committee member go along as you thought might happen a while back?
-
It all sounds brilliant - I only wish we were closer as I know my children would love to come along at easter. good luck with it all xx
-
Hi fleecewife - just catching up on this thread for next weekend - what day is best to go and if there is anything we can do that would be great - we're near Lauder so probably about 1 and half hours away which isn't too bad. Let me know if there's anything ... many thanks (amanda)
-
Hi Amanda. So far it looks as if we have people to cover for Fri and Mon but there's probably just me for Sat and Sun, so if you could manage either of those days that would be great. Happy Hippy is busy this weekend but by Monday she will be here too to help us make the last minute arrangements - like everything ;D ;D ;D Being a granny I am rather out of touch with what is 'in' these days, so mums will have a better idea of how to appeal to teenagers who may want to join so they can help out at Palacerigg with wonderful jobs such as mucking out :D :D I've never quite seen the appeal myself, but I can remember girls at my school going mad just for the chance to muck out some horses ::) Maybe I had enough mucking out to do at home already ;) The idea is that we (the Friends ) will publicise our existence at the Easter Event to help recruit new members who are not already smallholders so they can have the opportunity to experience animal keeping first hand, by helping out the stockmen. Anyone under the age of 18 will have to have a parent or guardian with them so we need to persuade parents too :D With only two stockmen there, some Friends would be most helpful.
Our other task for the weekend is to tell visitors as much as we can about our rare breeds of farm livestock and why it is so important for places such as Palacerigg to keep them and the RBST to ensure their survival. The Friends and the RBST will have tables side-by-side so if there is only one person there at any point we can man them both together.
We need leaflets and anything else anyone can think of to attract people to come and see us.
-
I'm here in body (it's just my mind which is elsewhere at the mo ;))
I've got pretty much everything sorted for the SPKA meet tomorrow, so will dedicate some thinking time to Palacerigg tonight and hopefully come up with some ideas :)
Amanda, it's great that you're able to help out - we'll be gentle with you ;) ;D
I know this thread is all about Palacerigg but can I do a wee plug for the RBST too ?
I'm hoping to get a South of Scotland RBST group up and running towards the end of the year (after all the pig shows are past ;)) to span the gap between Cumbria and the Caledonian group up North - if anyone is interested in getting involved please get in touch or see me at Palacerigg next weekend (I'll be there Friday & Monday)
Talk to you soon about plans Fleecewife  And hey, you might be a granny - but you're a very young granny. I don't know too many grannies with a passion for motorbikes :o ;D ;D ;D

-
I am more likely to be able to make Saturday and Monday- so let me know which is better. Can bring along the other half as well.

Ooh goody Beth  - Saturday please please :) :)
There is apparently special parking for exhibitors so you shouldn't be parking half a mile down the hill.....

You wait til you see me riding ;D ;D ;D :o People's faces are very funny when I take off my crash helmet - they do NOT expect to see a granny :D :D 8)
It's great you are getting together a new RBST group for this area HH  and of course I will be right in there to help :D I hope we can get plenty of supporters for it.
I will get back to you on Sun about P'rigg and any ideas anyone else has for leaflets, posters, eye-catching activities etc - please let us know - the more minds on this the better. There are some great ideas already on here so we will use them of course.
-
Hi all, yes I'm happy to come along Saturday but won't get there until about 10.30ish if that's ok and you can just give us orders .... sorry is that helpful - until you're there and know what's going on its hard to pinpoint where we can be of any help .... always happy to help though!
Oh and yes, I would definately be interested in an RBST group covering the south of scotland (whole family is members) - it's needed! Many thanks and see you Saturday. ;)
-
Sorry - not able to volunteer us for being there at any specific day/time, but we will definately be coming across at some point.
Juliet  will text you when we know are on the way in case you need anything bringing over.
-
Hi folks  Juliet is suffering terribly with a migraine (and my reiki doesn't seem to be helping) so in her absence I've taken up command ;D Watch the chaos unfold ;)
Goosepimple - 10.30am is fine, the event doesn't open to the public til 11am so there's no worries there. It's likely hopefully going to be you and Beth (Ballingall) on Saturday, hopefully with someone from RBST as well. We'll have everything up there - leaflets, competitions, whatever we're doing (once we know what we're doing !) so it's just a case of smiling and telling folk about the story so far. We'll get an email sent out asap with a brief outline and info and once I've been up on Friday morning I'll be able to give you much more info.
Beewyched - maybe you could cover for lunch/tea breaks when you get there ?
More information will follow as and when we've got it - thanks so much for all your support :-*
Karen
-
Hi Karen,
I hope to be available for Saturday too.
We've started lambing, so it slightly depends on all going well, but I've scheduled grandchildren visits to keep Saturday (& possibly Monday) free.
Best Wishes,
John
-
Excellent John, or should that be eggcellent (it is nearly Easter after all ;D)
We'll keep you up to date with developments ;)
Thanks so much - I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I completely understand that it's a lot to ask as everyone has their own commitments and it says a lot about what nice folks you are that you are prepared to take some time away from these to help someone else out - so from the bottom of my heart, it's a HUGE thank you to everyone who's getting involved.
Looking forward to seeing some new faces and meeting everyone over the course of the weekend.
Much love,
Karen
-
Karen/Juliet (hope the migraine's gone soon :bouquet: )
Looks like you'll be ok for Saturday, so will try for Sunday - no probs covering for breaks ;D Just a quick question - can we bring a dog with us as our bitch is in season & driving him nuts ::)
-
I would think, providing it's on a lead and 'under control' it would be okay - but it might be worth phoning just to double check ;)
Phone number is 01236 720047, can you let me know what they say ? I might take Boris down for a visit and scare some children :D ;D ;D ;D
-
Hi all  - I'm back - still wobbly but here :D Can't look at the screen for long yet.
Lynne  - it's great you can come - look forward to it, as it will be me there as well. For dogs, you can't take them into the area where the animals are close-penned ie near the visitor centre, and elsewhere obviously they have to be on a lead. I will be leaving the terrors at home (they ran away on Sunday and Lucy came back that night with an injured leg, but Rippy stayed out all night...eventually came back soaked and smelly)
HH and I will now get on with the final planning ..... actually I think just having people there being chatty will be mostly what we need.
Thank you all SOOO much for your support :) :) :)
-
Karen/Juliet (hope the migraine's gone soon :bouquet: )
Looks like you'll be ok for Saturday, so will try for Sunday - no probs covering for breaks ;D Just a quick question - can we bring a dog with us as our bitch is in season & driving him nuts ::)
Just remember it is warm now. Don't leave him in the car if you have to bring him with you. If you have no option then he is best left at home - separated from your bitch obviously - if you aren't there you won't hear the yowling ;) ;D
-
Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to come now, with my daughter moving home tomorrow and a dog show at the weekend with no dogs ready yet.

No - but the neighbours will Annie ::)
Hope all goes well for you at the show :hshoe: are you going to SKC? - both the boys are entered, but the young one is losing weight something awful over this season - just realised he's a boy, but not got the sense to know she's gone-over ::) he's been keeping us awake all night for the last 2 weeks asking to be "let-out" (asif ;)) every half an hour ???
-
Yup, will be at SKC. Gundog day.
Dogs and bitches? Been there got the T shirt - I had mother and son outside, son desperate to get to mother, mother desperate to get to husband, who was inside, desperate to get to either wife or auntie, who had the longest season known to man or dog. Total chaos for nigh on 6 weeks. Thank goodness for lockable cages and doors - Allez can open anything, even a tin can if I gave him one, and Bobby has decided via his hormones that Allez is 'persona non grata' and would happily kill him if given the chance. He will be sold to the highest bidder once I've got his work training to a standard I'm happy with.
-
Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to come now, with my daughter moving home tomorrow and a dog show at the weekend with no dogs ready yet.
Hi Annie  - sorry you won't be able to come. Unless....what about Monday? But I do understand that other things have to take priority. I think we may just about be able to cover all four days, even if there is only one person between the two tables sometimes.
-
Annie - I think I'd better get on with the hip-scoring :D will make sure we get over to the Brittany benches at some point during SKC so we can finally meet-up face 2 face (& fur 2 fur ;) )
Juliet - is there a good time to give you a 'phone today?
-
Is anyone else coming on Friday and if not please can you volunteer? :bouquet:
I am worried about being on my own with one stand let alone potentially two given I'm relatively new to this and haven't much of a scooby about a lot of rare breeds or even some of the species, don't know the park to give directions and will have enough challenge to find the place and stand there for a few hours let alone give out relevant answers to questions :o
I had in mind that this was an opportunity to meet likeminded folk off this board on the same side of the table rather than embarrass myself and whoever I'm representing by my ignorance :o HELP please :-*
-
ellied you will be fine it is the only way to learn (being thrown in at the deep end) directions i could not tell you how to get there and i could spit on it from where i was born and raised :o hubby and i were intending comming to this event but could make it friday if you have my arm up my back  what time would be a good starting point

Don't panic - I'll be there on Friday ;) ;D Only til around lunchtime though :-\
The staff at the park will be there, as will Ruth from the RBST.
All we need to do is smile, explain to people what we're trying to do. Which is - encourage the local people to get involved with the day to day care of the animals, learning, having fun and spending time out of doors in the process. There wil be a leaflet that people can take away and we'll make up a 'cheat sheet' for everyone too.
Don't panic that you don't know anything - by the end of the first hour you'll be feeling MUCH more confident. We're not there to educate as such, just to try and attract people who want to help.
Remember your reiki "Just for today - do not worry" ;)
See you Friday ;D
Lillian, the event officially starts at 11am, I'l be there from around 10ish (hopefully- depending on how lost I get ;) You know what I'm like ::) ;D) I'll do the arm twisting (and the begging) tomorrow
-
To find the park, just follow the brown signs for Palacerigg Golf Course which start outside Cumbernauld :). I'll see if I can find a map online. Ellied - don't panic - as HH says, she will be there and Ruth from RBST - Ruth is lovely and will keep you right (so is HH of course :D) . You just need to be enthusiastic 8) I think it will be relaxed and fun, so just look forward to enjoying the day.
-
Layout and directions - please could ellied, beewyched, ballingall, goosepimple and calum morrell pm me your email addresses as I now have information about the layout and access for the weekend, which I will forward to you (it has an attachment so I can't pm it). Anyone else I haven't sent it to, or who is coming but hasn't been included in the above, please pm me too. Thank you :)
-
I had been hoping to be present part of today, Saturday and part of Monday - but I'm only just getting urgent work out the way after getting home late on Wednesday. Should make it ok tomorrow though.
-
Thank you Calum :) I've forwarded the info I have to you. See you tomorrow.
Waiting to hear from HH and Ruth how it has gone today.
-
Hello
Today was good ;D
Many thanks to Ellie (Ellied) and Robert & Lillian Waddell for coming along and helping out :-*
The park was busy and there were lots of people, but unfortunately not many of them were coming into the marquee :-\
Maybe having people out & about just outside the entrance to try and lure them in would be a good idea ;)
But lots to see and do for the kids, and a source of inspiration for all smallholders - I'm now thining about Shetland cows, but shhhhh, don't tell Bruce ;)
Enjoy the weekend folks, I'll be back on Monday with my ever so slightly mental gang in tow ::) - look forward to seeing some of you there ;D
Karen x
-
I made it along after all, though rather late. Must have been approaching 3:30 by the time the queue of traffic let me drop down the exhibitors entrance. So rather than attempt to do a couple of photo sessions with people I used the time to meet Ruth at the RBST stand and then went and spoke to Ann in the visitor centre office to let her know my plans for tomorrow and Monday (she was in the process of creating some signs to try to coax more people into the tent and has added the free photo session to it).
After that I just wandered around taking some scene setting photos - I'll select and upload a small gallery of those later on.
See some of you tomorrow!
-
Ah, that's who Calum was ;) sorrry I'm too new to recognise folk :)
I have to say I enjoyed the day, tho I got lost trying to find the place multiple times, wasn't much better leaving and have no guarantee I could ever find it again :o Signposts seem few and far between and you really have to live in Cumbernauld (recently) to have a chance of working out the road system :o
The dangerous bit wasn't the ranting local ;) nor the dancing badger :o and the guy with face painted in a batman mask :o and all the sheep posters were handed out safely - no the dangerous bit was that I got too enthusiastic and wanted to steal a few sheep, had a list of different chicken breeds I wanted to acquire, was mildly tempted by a cow and a donkey :o and if I'd lived closer I'd have been volunteering to work with the lovely guys that operate the place ::) from the animal attendants to the lady in the cafe, what friendly folk :)
Oh and the TAS folk weren't bad either ;)
-
now i did offer to guide you out to the M80 a very entertaining day you did not say how you managed in glasgow
-
Ah, that's who Calum was ;) sorrry I'm too new to recognise folk :)
Ok, now I'm trying to work out which one you were! The lady on the left of the RBST table (my right)?
And can I just say what ridiculously poor weather it is right now. I'm hoping it improves by mid-day, otherwise I don't think I'm going to be getting many takers for the photo lessons :(
-
Chuff sake this weather is awful.
The first thing I'm going to have to say to anyone interested in photo guidance is "Your camera is barely splash proof, I have to advise you not to use it in the rain.". This is going to be useful for them >:(
Off to palacerigg, hoping it dries up even if it doesn't brighten up.
-
Just got back from today's effort - total wash-out, literally - even the marquee leaks, and I'm sure the drips followed me around ::) :D Torrential rain all day and we eventually gave up and left by 3, as did all the other exhibitors. very few people through the park today.
BUT Sunday is another day and the weather promises to be DRY so hopefully all the folk who didn't come today will come tomorrow.
Thank you to goosepimple and her family , Fergie  and cmorrell  for sticking it out :bouquet:
-
Sorry I don't think I was much help on Saturday fleecewife, kids just got too cold and miserable and dad a bit hacked off with sopping wet dog and soggy chips - hopefully Sunday was better. Kids said in car that, 'at least we got to meet fleecewife' - ahh what a great consolation.. :D
Lovely to meet you and fergie by the way :D
-

Except the day you came ;D :( ;D You must take the family again on a lovely sunny day. Did you get to the aerial walkway?
I was too tired last night to write up about Monday but that went well too - sunny but not too hot and lots of visitors. We signed up quite a few more members, including some who are very keen to help out. Now to the next stage to decide what to do.
A big thank you to Happy Hippy  and Rebecca , the Waddells  and Calum Morrell  for making it a success.
