Purchase options and add-ons

Goats are fairly adaptable creatures in the wild but, if kept as pets, or commercially farmed, they rely on their owners not only for food, but also for protection from diseases, injury and predators. As the title of the book suggests, goat health and welfare are closely linked and it is a truism that 'a fit and healthy goat is a happy and productive goat'. This is comprehensive and non-technical book covering the following: general goat health, welfare, behaviour and related management issues; principal diseases and abnormalities affecting goats - considers their causes, main diagnostic signs, treatment and prevention; recognizing abnormal behaviour as an early indicator of ill-health; the importance of goat keepers establishing good working relationships with their vets; poisoning and diseases that can be transmitted between goats and man.

I am a veterinary surgeon, and spent the first ten years after qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1974 working as a farm animal vet mainly in Devon and Dorset.

In 1983 - I joined the government veterinary investigation service, working as a veterinary investigation officer and gross pathologist for the next 30 years. During this time I investigated many different outbreaks and incidents of health, disease and welfare issues mainly in farm animals, but also in a range of other species including zoo animals.

I was heavily involved in the investigation and control of BSE , and in a variety of roles during the outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in 2001 and 2007.

I am currently an honorary vet to the British Goat Society and Chairman of the Goat Vet Society, and a past president of the British Cattle Veterinary Association.

I am a visiting Reader in veterinary pathology at the university of Surrey's new veterinary school, and a visiting lecturer at Bristol, Liverpool and London schools of veterinary science.

Sorry! but I wasn't impressed by this book. I bought it expecting the information to be detailed. I have several goat-keeping handbooks and they all cover the common illnesses/diseases etc but not in depth (which is fair enough). A book however, that describes itself as a 'vetrinary' guide could be expected to be more detailed.
I suppose in some ways it is - some ghastly pictures! It didn't add significantly to my knowledge and is incredibly defeatist. Under plant poisoning it basically says - nothing can be done, your vet will just alleviate the worst symptoms. One of my kids recently ate laurel and was taken very poorly - our local vet treated him very successfully & he is now back to normal. Had I taken heed of this book I may have just left the poor little fellow to die - on the basis that there is nothing that can be done.

This book is a must-have for goat herders. Easy to use, but technical enough to answer questions. I always like to have a few books about a subject (and do have more books about goats), but - were I only allowed one - this is the best.

I really like this book, it goes deeper into the medical issues surrounding your goats. It is easy to use when you are wondering whether to call the vet or just need basic care information.
