- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis fine book should have a prominent place in the library of every small brewer. It's tautly written but in a friendly, accessible style that encourages and supports the novice in brewing good beer. It's very well laid-out, with uncluttered pages and a clear, easy-to-read font. The opening section on the history of beer and of brewing traditions is inspiring and interesting, never overwhelming or too detailed. The resource pages e.g. those detailing and explaining hop varieties invite experimentation and creativity.
Some earlier reviewers have sniped at the author for not fulfilling the 'self-sufficiency' remit implied in the title, as if self-sufficiency only means growing your own barley or digging your own well for water. But if self-sufficiency means doing a proficient job of brewing your own beer, with an amiable and experienced guide, then this book delivers on that 100%.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 August 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm new to home brewing, and needed a book to explain it all to me in simple terms, without resorting to jargon or assuming prior knowledge. This book does exactly that, guiding you through the history and the science of beer-making up to actual recipes and brew tips in the later chapters.
It starts off slowly without being boring, and introduces new words and concepts bit-by-bit so that at the end of it you know what all the different things are, and could hold your own in a conversation with proper beardy ale drinkers.
Totally recommended for beer or brewing enthusiasts, and the eralier chapters would be a good casual read for anyone interested in the history of beer.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is not about self-sufficiency as I would define it. Luckily, that was something I had anticipated having read other reviews.
Nonetheless - as a quick reference guide, with up to the point explanation of brewing techniques, I found it very useful.
I had previous, albeit limited, experience in kit brewing, but I wanted to know more about ingredients, processes and, why not, history (just enough to go by though ;)) For that goal this book was perfect. Just enough of everything. Reading it is easy since it is well written, relevant, nicely split into manageable chunks of information and with lots of recipes.
I haven't tried recipes yet, so can't really comment on that since I'm still brewing kits, but I feel more comfortable to try extract brewing soon.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis has been purchased for my husband who is a homebrew novice but would like to become more advanced. I have only skimmed through the book however it seems informative, with different recipes and brewing tips. I'm sure we will have homebrew successes after Christmas made from scratch instead of from kits.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat little book for a new comer to homebrewing this book is very informative
all you need to know practicley about brewing your own beer. It covers the basics
from brewing from a kit to the more adventures useing hops/barley.Also gives you

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 October 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a super book which is relly instructive, interesting, and handy-sized. Included are metric conversions to each reference and a specific gravity correction table which is really useful. No misleading information. I like it a lot,
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2010Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI think it is a great book to start learning how to do home brewing. With its three levels to do home brewing, you have the choice to invest more and less in this hobby/experience.
I now found a nearby home brew shop and I am looking forward to try some recipe.
