" Great to look at, fascinating to read, even if you're not fowl-minded "
--Saga Magazine (April 2010)

'The whole book is peppered with some of the best contemporary illustrations of popular breeds that we've ever seen...but this certainly isn't just a picture book...There's plenty of useful text included too, covering breed introductions, buying advice, housing. common ailments, feeding etc.' --Practical Poultry, June 2010

'This beautifully illustrated book is a great starting point for learning more about hens.' --Garden Answers, July 2010

'a beautiful book'
--Country Smallholding, August 2010

'The Illustrated Guide to Chickens is an attractive book which (the pun cannot be resisted) to crow about. It is more suitable for reference collections than many other recent poultry books.' --Science and Technology Journal, 2010

The pictures in this book are absolutly gorgeous, much better than a camera can capture, the text is mostly specific to each breed but there is a little on keeping hens but to my mind it's far outweighed by the breed descriptions & paintings. It's not the book to turn to for practical advice re: illnesses etc. but fantastic for those choosing a breed to start or add to a flock.

Bought this because, as an artist and chicken-keeper, it was pretty, foremost, and would be good couch potato reading. It proved successful on both fronts. It makes a great sunday morning read with your tea as you dream of getting this hen or that rooster. The illustrations were wonderful and prompted my dad (a farm boy in the 20s)to share his stories of raising chickens and selling eggs in small town Texas.
Do feel they should leave off the 'How to keep them" as it really is more about what to expect from the hen than how to keep them happy.

I bought this for a friend who very much enjoyed Celia Lewis's 'A Country year' and who is contemplating keeping Chicken for eggs and to interest and educate her two small Children. I think that this will be another 'Hit'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but basic

I was very surprised to see that all of the pictures in this book are beautiful watercolors. I really enjoyed looking through each page and reading the descriptions - especially the little egg on each page indicating the color from that breed. That said, this is not a book to go to when someone is looking for specific information on color and feather detail, although there is a written description. It would also be hard for someone new to poultry to take the images from this book and match them to birds they may never have seen before. It has good, straightforward, basic information on choosing a breed, housing and feeding, etc. The book is based in England, and lists their poultry classes and websites.

So, in the end, not a book I would recommend for a beginner, but it is a beautiful book for a coffee table and wonderful gift for a poultry lover. I'm very glad to have it in my collection.
