Oats
« on: February 10, 2022, 06:54:22 pm »
I am going to try growing some oats this year but sourcing 20kg of seed is proving to be tricky.

I have found bags of naked oats sold as bird feed but they don't say what variety they are and so there is no way of knowing if they are winter or spring variety.
Does it matter if I end up with winter oats planted in the spring?  Will they grow as well?

Any other suggestions for where to get oats for planting?

Aren't crops grown near you now?

There haven't been any cereals grown in the top end of Strathnairn for a couple of generations, we are just to high up to make it commercially worth while (of course in the past the options were grow oats or starve so they usually choose the former).  The farmer I buy straw from in the lowlands near Inverness might be worth an ask though so thanks for prompting me to think about that.

My wife is actually planning to go to the Strathnairn farmers AGM next week.  I don't think there are any farmers on it that grow anything but there is a wealth of knowledge that is freely given... And contacts who have binders, threshing machines, etc, etc.
