Cows PD'd today
« on: November 24, 2015, 04:57:41 pm »
and all in calf. Rosie (first calf) due 1st June, Annie (Rosie's dam and expecting her third calf) due 4th June and Blizzard (Annie's dam and expecting her fifth calf) due 26th June (and messing up my usual trip to the Highland Show).

We had Vicki jagged to stop any unplanned pregnancies and both of this year's calves blood tested for BVD. And I did all seven for fluke, worms and extrtnal parasites.

So pleased that they're all in calf  :excited:

Nice dates at a hopefully pleasant time of year!! And congrats for them all being in calf!

What's the process like for PDing? We aren't sure if ours are in calf or not, we are just going by when they last were seen bulling

Our vet uses an ultrasound scanner. It's inserted into the rectum so the cows need to be restrained although they seem pretty unconcerned once it's in. We just tie ours up and give them some hay and they stand pretty still just eating.

It's pretty cool because he has a wireless screen so we can see what he's seeing so we could see the hearts beating and the legs moving. He can give a rough estimate of timing but we used that to confirm what we'd seen while the bull was out with the cows.

The need to be at least 35 days pregnant, so we get him five weeks after we take the bull out but since he'd caught them fairly early on they're all about three months pregnant.
