Two questions - ram lambs showing and selling
« on: August 08, 2022, 01:51:28 pm »
First off - my halter-trained ram lamb broke his horn off. Can they still be shown with a horn missing or is it curtains for him?

And second - attending a society supported coloured breed sale - is it normal to pay an entry fee? I thought you paid commission the other end. Or does it work with sellers fee upfront and commission paid from the buyer? When Iíve taken lambs to mart I just pay commission on the sale price.

Don't know the answer to either question ,but  the breed standard should tell everything either on line or in society paperwork or the sale/show catalogue  , the same catalogue should tell you the rules for the sale/ show as they all differ

Are these Hebrideans?  There's no reason you can't show a lamb with a broken horn but you are extremely unlikely to have him placed as it's an animal's appearance on the day that counts, not what he might look like in a year or so..  I can't think of any Heb shows where lambs are forward in fact.  There is of course no reason not to use him for breeding if he still looks good in a year. Usually a broken horn on a lamb will grow back, not as big as the unbroken one but by maturity it doesn't really show
Yes you pay an entry fee, the buyer pays commission, the Mart makes its profit.

You pay commission as a seller too. I wonder if the entry fee goes to the society, then commission paid as normal by buyer and seller.
