Trailers for livestock
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:30:47 pm »
Hello

We need to take 3 of our inherited sheep to the abbatoir. Are there strict regulations regarding trailers?

We have a trailer that is certainly big enough, has a ramp up into the trailer, has a roof and has some ventilation. We would obviously clean the trailer before and after use however...............it is not a 'proper' livestock trailer. Can we use ours or do we need to find another one?????

THANKS

Hello,

So long as it's disinfected & clean there won't be an issue. Your local veterinary office should be able to advise which disinfectant is approved for use.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as the inside of the trailer doesn't have any potentially harmful bits sticking out and the floor is strong enough to carry the weight - but make sure the rear door is safe and the sheep can't break out - also, you are supposed to have ramp gates, but a couple of hurdles will do the trick.

I suggest you use the power washer at the abattoir to clean out; domestic appliances are simply not strong enough. Good luck

i usually use jeyes fluid!
just make sure you read the instructions or you could burn the feet of your sheep if its not diluted!
