You could always go and buy a tup lamb (a texel or suffolk or similar), use him this autumn and then sell on as shearling tup next summer...

I have a Wilts Horn Ram - about 7 miles south of Salisbury if you would like.

I have a very handsome Portland Ram who could come on his holidays.  Just outside Wincanton.

Portland sounds perfect!!  (no offence to any others).  I have a Dorset horned ram but he is only 5 months old at the moment so no use until next year.

Can you pm me details and i will get hubby to sort out details with you.

Many thanks

Has any within reasonable travelling distance of Turriff (Aberdeenshire) got a Herwick ram for hire?  Preferably registered.  I've just the two Herwick ewes, so not worth buying a ram, but would like to breed them pure this year.  Thanks.

For the number of ewes you have the dorset ram lamb you have will cover them no problem at all. He'll be mature enough to work at six months old.
It's always worse for someone else, so get your moaning done before they start using up all the available symathy!

Oi Dougal! Shhhhh!  :D :D :D

I disagree, and not because you want to loan my ram (pm sent BTW).  The earliest I've known a ram lamb to come into action is 8 months...

Our Charollais ram lamb successfully tupped last year at 8 days short of 8 months old  :D  I do think he would have worked sooner, mind, had any of the girls been ready.  ;)

Our Jacob ram worked at 7 months and didn't miss one of his girls (only 6 because of his age).  All but the shearling lambed within 10 days of each other without sponging.  And I do know of a case where a four month old Jacob ram lamb managed to cover a ewe successfully.  Are there variations between the  breeds perhaps?  We are intending to work a a 6 month BWM ram lamb this year on a few carefully selected girls.

Our Badger Face Ram Lamb worked at 7 months on 11 bigger mature ewes, I don't think he was ready any sooner.

With only four ewes to cover I'd be surprised if he didn't cover them, up lambs are regularly used among the hill breeds where the tup lambs are only 6-7 months old. If you ever want to see a young sheep working hard let a scrap of a rig in with the ewes for a night in september and then see how many lambs you get!
