Title: Worming gilts before farrowing
Post by: farmingfriends on October 21, 2007, 03:03:13 pm
Do I need to worm my gilts before farrowing? If so when and what do I need to give them?
Thanks for any help and advice. Sara from farmingfriends

Sarah I try to worm about 3 weeks before the sows farrow, normally with equvalan or whatever else the chemist has available.  Living in France where free range pigs are much rarer have to take what we can get.

I tend to stick the wormer in a jam sandwich.  It works for us.

I agree with Hilarysmum re timing of worming.

In France I have found a wonderful product from the vets which is called
Verbamec D (solution injectable). It is an antiparasite treatment for internal and external parasites. With one injection every four months it treats worms and mites and anything else that might be around!

For 50ml it cost us 45€ which for us works out at about 1€ per pig which is great value and it is very effective. I inject them as they are eating - head down and in it goes - it is very easy to administer and quantity is worked out by weight of pig.

For those with just one or two pigs the vet may be able to sell just enough for your numbers rather than a whole bottle? It is worth asking.

I am sure there must be a similar product in UK.
