Live pig weight
« on: September 09, 2013, 07:04:52 pm »
I've a bit of a problem with the formula given on the Slaughtering Page of the Pig section of this web site.  The formula is Girth x Girth x Length /69.3 for Kg or /400 for pounds. This would give a weight of fewer pounds than Kg so can't be right. Further, the difference between lbs and kg should be 2.2x fewer kg than lbs . Is it me or is there an error in the formula?

it does look like they got it wrong - as i understand it the formula works like this
METRIC- girth in metres X girth in metres X length in metres MULTIPLIED by 69.3 = weight in kg
IMPERIAL - girth in inches X girth in inches X length in inches DIVIDED by 400 = weight in lbs

if i'm wrong I'm sure someone else will know

That's right as far as I know.

I measure in inches so my sum is girth x girth x length / 400 = answer in lbs  /2.2 = weight in kg.

Hope that makes sense (And correct!!)????

I use;
Heart girth squared (measured in meters) multiplied by length (again, in meters) then multiplied by 69.3 to give weight in Kg.

But, as a rough guide, when they measure 40 inches round the hearth girth they're approx 85Kg and ready to go  :thumbsup: (courtesy of Fowgill Farm)

Thanks for that. It now makes sense. It looks like my pigs are almost ready to go - 39.5" girth 138lbs, and 39" 119lbs.
