Hi ther
« on: March 20, 2023, 12:02:50 pm »
Hello all, I am an ex-pat Brit living in the US. We have a smallholding here of around 15 acres (we are not metric!). We mainly concentrate on self sufficiency, but I have a large flock of Breda fowl.
We are both retired and enjoying the country life and keeping ourselves relatively fit and healthy. Unlike UK, the US  does not label all GMO foodstuffs, so we try to avoid store bought food as much as we can. My partner cooks from scratch and our main meat source is venison.
I think I've rambled on long enough, hope to gather lots of tips/tricks and new friends, Sue

Thanks for the welcome :) We live in the beautiful Finger Lakes area of upstate NY. Very rural, not how I imagined NY state many years ago when we moved here.
We are both getting up there in years (68 for me), so not quite as active as I would like to be, but... we do fell our own wood for heat, till/plant the earth and care for around 50 chickens  :)
The Breda fowl are a rare breed worldwide, not accepted by the American Poultry Association, but we band of breeders are working on that. They are a great homesteading bird, they love to forage, are very gentle and lay around 180-200 white eggs/year. They have no comb - the only breed in the world that is combless!
