Here's a Q to move us on from the sausage and bacon subjects. Our first two Pigs are going a wonderful job prepairing a vegi plot for us, well done lads! so now what to do about the pig poo, we'd like to know is can we plant right away or is the poo to "hot" and new?

Give it at least a couple of months to break down as it will be too sharp for any plants to cope with when it's fresh - tempting though it is to chuck it on straight away, I know. Rule of thumb is that when it stops smelling, it's ready for the garden.

Whatever you do DON'T spread it on the soil fresh.... It would actually take nutrients FROM the soil as it breaks down. The recommended resting time for cattle and sheep manure by defra is 22 weeks
