Water softeners with septic tank
« on: March 26, 2017, 09:36:27 am »
We are about to get our plumbing and central heating system replaced, and as we are in a hard water area we've been considering getting a water softener added at the same time. But as we are on a septic tank system, I'm trying to work out if it is a good idea.

If I read articles written by people trying to sell softeners they say it is fine, and by reducing the amount of detergent you are using the tank can be healthier. On the other hand, if I read articles by people selling septic tanks they say the increased saltiness of the water can cause the crust to be disturbed.

Does anyone have any experience of running a softener with a septic tank?

Thanks
