Honda engine Problem?
« on: July 11, 2016, 11:40:27 am »
Hi
We have a BCS mowing machine, i think it has a GX160 (could be 120, it's down the field).
I was mowing thistles, in rushes, engine suddenly stopped.
Since then it will start on choke, engine racing (normally starts slow on choke, speeds up as you slide  choke off). If you try turning choke off it immediately dies, any thoughts Please?  Really need this running for cutting grass for lamb.

Cant help with the BCS but i had an almost identical situation with a different rotovator and it turned out to be the diaphragm in the carb had split.
This would might explain the sudden change you had and the control of fuel symptons with racing then cutting out.
i could be miles off the mark as well though.  :-[
If you cant beat 'em then at least bugger 'em about a bit.

Tackle the obvious first...its suprising how often they are missed,

Is their petrol in the tank ?

Are you on a banking or slope which means a part full tank isn't enough for fuel to get to the outlet ?

Is the fuel tap fully open ?

Is there a fuel filter which is blocked ?

Other than that sounds like a carb problem.  Take the carb to bits and clean any muck out. Check the float is moving freely. Look at diaphram as mentioned above if there is one- but ithink that is a problem on briggs and Stratton engines.

Give the carb a good clean out. Use compressed air to blow out the main jet.

Starting on choke but not running off of it points to  a blocked main jet.

Thanks, he didn't see anything, but cleaned everything and it's now running.
