Sheep Spot On for flystrike?
« on: July 08, 2016, 01:15:29 pm »
Hi folks,

I asked our vets to give me something to prevent flystrike in our sheep, and they prescribed Zoetis "Spot On", which is a 1% w/v solution of Deltamethrin.

However, now I look at the box, it says it's for treating ticks, keds and lice on sheep, and established blowfly strike ("apply directly to the maggot infested area as soon as fly strike is seen").

Have I made a mistake then, or am I missing something somewhere?

I'd be looking for another vet! :)

Yes the label is correct, Spot-On will NOT prevent flystrike, it will only treat an existing strike. Your vet is wrong.

For prevention you need something like Crovect or Clik.

Crovect has a shorter withdrawal period and is mostly used around here for lambs destined for slaughter after the end of that period.  Clik lasts for around 16 weeks and applied once the fleece is 1cm long after shearing will generally see out the danger period with one application.

Cool, thanks everybody!

I'd be looking for another vet! :)

Well, this is their first mistake, so I'll let them off as long as they give me a refund.

Crovect now on order  (didn't fancy the shirt withdrawal associated with Clikzen  ;)

Crovect is good but be sure to apply it in 4 strokes on the body as shown on the bottle, and reapply every 6 weeks. We had a lamb get strike on the 6th week one year, even though it says 6-8 weeks on the bottle always reapply after 6. I did our lambs yesterday- the day before there were blow flies hovering around them  :-[
