Berkshires for bacon
« on: January 02, 2016, 11:47:53 am »
I had weaners for the first time last year, got great joints but am really missing bacon (esp. as I now hate buying it from the supermarket). So this year I am hoping to take a pig to about 8/9 months and get it butchered differently.

Only issue is I really wanted to keep berkshires this year, and from reading posts on this forum there seems to be a split between berkshires putting on fat if left to get big and others saying it's down to the feed regime. I do want to try and sell some of the meat to friends & family, so am I best to go for an easier bacon breed (prob. OSB if I can find a breeder?)

Maybe I can smuggle a berkshire onto the land later in the year just for pork..... ;D

I am doing bacon from mine.  Just had some of the gammon fabulous. My son's mother in law deemed the pork joint I gave them the best cut of meat she has ever had.
