what breed of duck?
« on: February 22, 2010, 12:35:15 pm »
Hi, my OH wants to get a few ducks. If we do would need to be dual purpose what's the view on a good dual purpose breed? Preferably ones that like to go to bed at night if there is such a thing  ;D

we had one of our drakes for dinner once (because we had to, not really by choice) - not much meat on a campbell and fairly tough...I'd go for Muscovies or Aylesburies for dual purpose. :&>

What about a saxony or orpington? Muscovy and aylesbury are more meat ducks.

We bought 3 Muscovy ducks last summer and now have more than I can count. They are good layers, good sitters, MUTE ( I love that part!), pretty, intelligent, and low maintenance. We fell in love with them, I buy them whenever i see any available. Good meat birds, although I have yet to eat one. Im told it tastes like veal, others have said a cross between beef and venison. I have googled images of the meat and it looks like beef and is supposedly 98% fat free. We have some for sale and have placed a note in the for sale section of the forum.
