Tamworth boar - stud?
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:33:33 pm »
I start by saying openly I know nothing about pigs, this enquiry may sound ignorant because it is!

Someone I know mentioned they have a Tamworth sow that they wanted to breed, but the only boar nearby has now gone to a better place, not sure if they mean bacon butties or died of old age, didn't think to ask ;) but now they don't have access to a boar and they live on Jura so while they don't really want a boar, and would rather find a stud to send her to, there is also the matter of ferry costs with trailers etc.  And they aren't quite sure which way to go, buy or borrow or send away the sow.

Any thoughts?  Anyone have a Tamworth boar on the west coast that might help out?  As far as I can make out they're eating the offspring and not that fussed if they're pure Tamworth or cross bred, but I may be wrong, it was a passing conversation but I thought I'd ask since there are so many piggy people that might know, or might want to go on holiday to Jura with a pig in the boot or something, honestly I haven't a clue what is feasible, practical or cost effective.

Sorry, hope you can stop laughing long enough to give sensible advice in simple words please :)

have they considered AI? fresh semen should last 5 days so depends on the postal service they have but its worth a pop. not sure on the price now but it used to be about £20.

OK, sounds good.  So other than west coasters they could actually collect from, this widens the net to other UK sources if anyone does AI please get in touch.  I'm in Fife and they MAY be coming to see me in the next few weeks so east coast or other central belt could go back with them quicker than the post if so..
