Free and subsidised courses for Scottish smallholders from SRUC
« on: September 29, 2013, 04:44:35 pm »
Hello everyone, and welcome to the first newsletter launching our free courses for Smallholders, and keeping you informed of other courses available in Scotland.

This mail group is comprised of those who have asked to be kept informed, either at our stall at last year’s Scottish Smallholder and Grower Festival, or through local smallholder associations or online forums.

First of all, a huge thank you to you all – if it wasn’t for all of you over the past year expressing your interest and signing up to hear more, we would not have been able to prove that funding was needed for free education for smallholders. Well done!

If there is not a course in your area this year, don’t worry, as if these run well, there will be more next year. If you know someone else in your area who is interested, feel free to pass on my email address and they can contact me to get updates and this will register more interest in your area.

We’ll be at the festival tomorrow, so feel free to pop by and rifle through all our free take-home information leaflets and booklets for any tips or technical notes that might benefit you. You can also sign up to request a place on the courses if any of the dates suit you. If you won’t be at the festival tomorrow, don’t worry – just email me back if you would like to book a place on any of the courses, and your request will be given equal priority.

Please note – the places on all free courses are limited. Filling out a booking request at the festival or sending an email requesting to book a place does not guarantee a place. They will be chosen fairly from all requests if we have too many applicants. Please do not request places unless you know you are able to use them.  Thanks!

Time: 10.00-15.30.

Practical lambing courses have been running at various SRUC/SAC venues for many years. These courses give very practical demonstrations and descriptions of possible lambing difficulties and how to correct them. Please note, the courses may involve handling dead lambs during demonstrations.
These courses are extremely valuable in providing you with the skills to save a lamb which is experiencing a difficult birth, or to give you the knowledge to judge when further assistance should not be attempted and veterinary attention may be necessary instead.

Booking is essential as places are very limited and these courses are very popular. Contact Rachel Murray, Training Manager; Tel 01387 242918 or email rachel.murray @sruc.ac.uk to find out more or to book.

The list looks amazing. Congratulations to all who have worked to get government funding for these events. Will be circulating to the great and good in Wales, in the hope of doing something similar. Well done, Rosemary.

Well done, Rosemary.

I can't take any credit - it's mainly down to Caroline Robinson and all the smallholders who spoke to the SRUC staff at the Smallholder Festival and told them what they wanted.

I hope the courses are well supported.

Hi everyone!

And thanks to Rosemary for posting on the newsletter I sent out to our big newsletter group a couple of weeks ago - it was great to find it already up when I went to post it a few days later, it shows the power of social networking at work, which is how we got the funding in the first place!

If anyone wants to send me their email address for inclusion in the occasional email updates on free courses (with the odd partially subsidised course that may be of interest to some) then feel free to do so and I will pop your email address on the list.

We could still squeeze a couple of people on the pig course near Aberdeen on Friday 15th November, and maybe on the sheep course near Aberdeen on Friday 22nd, but the other sheep and goat course are looking pretty well-stacked unless we have any drop-outs.

Details and confirmations will be sent out to those who have gained a place in the very near future.

Don't forget there is a waiting list for courses which are already full, to which you are welcome to add your name to get first pick the next time. If we get enough interest, there will be more.

Kind regards,

Caroline

Hi Rosemary, these sound superb.  Could you post Caroline's contact details though please, since I can't reply to the E-mail as such?

Thanks!

Please help if you know the people below....

Hi everyone,

We have been processing our requests for courses and so far it looks like we will manage to fit most people, I'm glad to say. The details will be going out this week.

But: Can you help?

We have two course request forms filled out with incomplete email addresses (it's so easy to get distracted while filling it out, there are so many interesting things going on at the festival!)

If anyone knows Catherine Foy or Bryde Marshall, or if these people are members, can you please get in touch and let them know that we cannot contact them? Both have asked to attend courses, and I have had a quick look on facebook etc, but I have had no luck.

If they have changed their mind and no longer want a place, no problems at all, I just didn't want anyone to be waiting expectantly to be contacted and end up disappointed and confused! It would be horrible if someone missed out that really wanted to come.

Have a good day folks,

Caroline
