But if something else is wrong with them they wouldn't be any good for laying, and they need to be at POL for them to know if they will lay.  I'll ask Jim if he knows.
This is Jim's reply
"I think someone  is getting a bit confused – they don’t start laying until about 6 months – anyway the ex bats, (and indeed ex-free range hens as well) are around 18 months old. It doesn’t matter whether they’re in batteries or outside or in barns – their laying drops in year 2.
