Second candling?
« on: June 27, 2013, 09:06:14 pm »
I have a Speckledy sitting on eggs.

We candled them at 7 days last weekend and there seemed to be something in each of them.

Is it worth candling them again this weekend to check that they are continuing to develop?

I am paranoid about eggs not developing as we have got only one chick out of two clutches so far to - possibly - undeveloped eggs going rotten and infecting the rest.  :(

If it was me I would
pygmy goats, gsd, border collie, scots dumpys, cochins, araucanas, shetland ducks and geese,  marrans, and pea fowl in a pear tree.

Well if she doesn't mind, you've got nothing to lose. Mind you, there's not much you can do about it one way or another - bit like asking the sex of a baby, some like to know to be prepared, others would rather have the surprise!

I shall re-candle them tonight.

If they haven't developed since last week I shall remove them.

I don't want one egg going rotten and infecting the whole clutch  :o  - that would be one surprise I could do without  :D ;)

Well - we had seven out of nine. I removed one after candling at week two and then another one didn't hatch on the day but we have six cream legbars - four female and two make plus a seventh - that was a "lucky egg" and I can't remember what the breed is. Pure white egg. Any suggestions?

I would say medium sized.

The breeder that we got them from has all sorts of breeds but sells eggs for Ancona, Lavender Araucana, Fiesian Fowl and Buff Sussex hens as well as other fowl and bantams etc.

It was definitely a hen's egg - pure white :)

They usually fail at the 3 day stage with bacterial infection (or infertile obviously) but it is at 7 days when you notice. The first 7 days are the most crucial so the eggs should not be disturbed anyway. Candling at 14 days confirms all is well so I would do it. Remove anything suspect (or mark it and candle those again before day 18). After that don't bother as the failures will be at hatching.

I think - looking at the internet, the "lucky egg'` chick may be an Ancona

Good rate  Sussex lay white eggs as well, don't they? Don't know about Buff Sussex though - given the ear colour, they're probably brown.
