I had a eight month old ram castrated using a burdizzo and local anesthetic. Vet was already here on a routine visit (horse teeth, I think). He charged £12.00 to castrate the ram; who I should add is now five years old and has NO offspring - so yes it does work perfectly when done correctly.

ETA - actually I think he was closer to seven months than eight, but either way it worked.

Slightly off topic from the original question, but we have older tups (around 18 months of age up to 2 1/2 years) vasectomised to use as teasers.  The testicles remain intact, but the tubes have a section removed.  Just a couple of stitches each side, which I remove myself a few days later.  They have a local anaesthitic, they don't seem bothered by it at all.
