We lost our old girl :o(
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:17:20 pm »
We had a lovely old Grey Orpington - she was one of our first hens that we 'accidentally' got from a rescue centre 6 years ago when we went to choose a cat!!  She was one of 6 birds who had been kept locked in a shed for a long time and they were all featherless.

They all turned out lovely and she ruled the roost, over the original hens and all the ex-batts we have got since.  She has been a funny old girl - over-seeing the others into the hen house each evening and telling them where they could roost and always the last out in the morning.  Tonight when we opened the nesting box we found her lying in the house with her head resting over the edge of the nest box.   :'(

It's silly I know but we both feel really sad, she really was our old character - probably hasn't laid eggs for some time but she was a sweetie who loved a cuddle.  Just some consolation that she must have laid down in the hen house and died peacefully and in comfort but still feel so sad.

:bouquet: So sorry to hear of the loss of your old girl  :'( .  Its not at all silly to feel sad as she had been part of your daily life for 6 years and you'll miss her.  :bouquet:

She's obviously had a great life with you and I'm glad she could have a peaceful end where she was happy too. But I'm sure you will miss her, she sounds like a great character

Bless you. Totally understandable. These little girls can give so much if given half a chance. Sounds like she had a great chance with you. Sorry she isn't part of your life anymore.

Thanks to your adoption of her she had a good reprieve from her original existence. I thought chickens were as stupid as common media makes them out to be until I got some, now I know what good pets they can be. My family's not let me cull some because of how attached they are, and I don't blame them. They can be such characters.
