Aphids
« on: June 24, 2009, 08:58:48 pm »
My polytunnel is developing a nasty greenfly problem!! I garden organically so do not want to use chemicals. I have released some ladybirds who are munching away but any other ideas?

Any advice anyone?

I have used soapy water (Ecover washing up liquid -too strong initially as it killed my pepper plants!) and have been using an organic bug killer (rapeseed oil) but still the little f*ckers are breeding like wild fire!!

Help needed!!

 :(

You can't use fairy liquid then? What itr does apparently is reduce the surface tension on the leaves and they fall off, then drown in the compost if it's wet enough

OK havong done some online research (what did we do without the interweb?) I am now in the process of brewing up an evil concoction!!

Tomato plants being a member of the nightshade family contain an alkaloid released when the leaves are ripped. So I have taken some leaves and shreeded them, covered them with boiling water (added some garlic as this too is an aphid deterrent) and will spray tomorrow!!!

MWHAHAHAHA death to aphids!!  ;D

when I had a greenhouse , it got an attack of greenfly and all sorts of aphids . I got some yellow card and smeared vaseline all over it , and held it just above the beasties and tapped the plant . It caught millions of the little buggers. I also left a few cards made up the same , near to the plants . These too caught loads of them , and the problem mostly went away . There were still some left, but most had gone . Maybe worth a try ...?

cheers
