Given the season, my husband and I were just discussing lent today and I was wondering why people traditionally give up eggs when this is the time of year when eggs are most easily available. He wondered whether that's why chicks are so associated with Easter - the 40 days of Lent give hens a chance to lay a clutch and then hatch just before Easter without anybody stealing them to eat? What do you reckon? I know they're a traditional spring fertility symbol too but it seemed to make sense!
