Lamb space
« on: October 28, 2012, 07:53:19 pm »
Hi all, I have a spare third of an acre which I want a raise a couple of cade lambs on next year.  It's good pasture that grows really quickly.  I was thinking of just a couple and rearing them on goats milk to start.  It's a corner of the field I raised a couple of sheep on this year and will be left unused until any lambs go on it (if that's a big enough size).  Any thoughts?  Oh, there is a field shelter there too.

Would a 1/3 acre be big enough?  Is 6 months enough time for that space to recover from the last sheep? Thank you

I think you would be ok with having a couple of lambs on a third of an acre. Were the last sheep that grazed it all up to date with worming etc? How much grass is there now, as grass won't really grow again until spring now anyway due to winter temps. Sheep are fairly even grazers, and if you got your lambs in March it would still be at least 6 weeks or so before they were weaned and relying on grass as the main source of food opposed to milk, so I think you would be ok.
