chick crumb cake?
« on: July 13, 2012, 04:03:35 pm »
When I was a kid my dad used to keep canaries. He would bake a cake to feed to the young chicks.
The cake looked sort of like a madeira but it didn't have any sugar in it. Once the cake was made he would slice it and put it back in a very low oven to dry out completely. Then he minced it until it was almost a powder. The cake was then stored in the old glass sweet jars. He would put a bit of crumb into a small bowl and spit on it to make a paste and then feed the chicks using a match stick.
Unfortunately dad is now long gone. Does anyone else know about a cake like this and if so could it be fed to young chickens?

???  Never heard of that one  ;D .

Chicks seem to eat a surprisingly large amount, especially as they get a bit older. Think you might be baking a lot of cakes, Bionic.  ;D
