Pig nuts VS grazing
« on: May 03, 2009, 08:59:58 am »
I've just a couple of Oxford Sandys. They're in a little paddock overgrown with grass and weeds so plenty to graze on. Question is, while there's still grazing material do I need to feed pig nuts as well? In a reduced quantity or at the normal 1lb to a month of age?

I ask because the guy we bought the weaners from said his first pig killed out very fat after eating every last living thing in it's enclosure - and being fed pig feed alongside. Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

I would still feed pig nuts but maybe a reduced amount and gradually increase as the grazing  decreases.

I woudl agree a reduced amount of pig nuts. Some of the more scientific and experienced members will be able to tell you how much to reduce it by - somewhere there is a thread about the comparative feed values of fruit and vegetables.

I only feed a small amount at this time of year. This is really only to keep them socialised and used to us. It makes it easier to move them if they associate us with food!!!!

I always thought that the 6 lbs a day for grown pigs was a must. My guys are having the best of both worlds!! I can feel their spine when i run my fingers down it, so they don't appear to be getting too fat.

Its up to 6 lbs a day until they are I think 20 weeks old.  AFter that reduce to 2 kilos a day.  Otherwise they do get fat.  Personally although we feed veggies, I would certainly feed at the 1lb per day per month of age ratio until they are nearly at slaughter weight or at least 4 months, otherwise you will not get well grown pigs.  (Thats my experience/understanding).

At the end of the day its the eye of the master etc.
