Duck with broken wing
« on: June 11, 2012, 11:03:34 pm »
One of my runner ducks has broken her wing. Pretty sure it has snapped on the lower part. There is no blood but the wing is hanging lower than the other one. Should I try and bandage it up/attach a splint, just leave her be and see if it mends, or put her out of her misery? I would rather avoid the latter if possible!

Hi,
Are you sure it's broken? It could be Angel-wing and only needs to be taped around the ducks body....... I tis usually to do with feeding practices - look on the internet...............

Positive, she is a year old and was fine until this evening.

Find something you can splint it with - ideally light and stiff, so aluminium, strong plastic....

Pad the splint a bit, then tape it to the wing to support it in the right position. I find that once I've splinted it and got it in a correct position, taping the wing to the body gives the best support. I use that bandage that's sticky to itself, as it doesn't pull feathers out, the better ones seem to cope with water ok. Obviously be as gentle as possible throughout.

Check her often, undo the bandage to the body every couple of days and let the air in for a few minutes. She'll mend and do fine.

We tried making a bandage to keep the wing against the body using a pair of old tights in an all body glove kind of way. Thought it was genius personally, but it only stayed on for about an hour  ::)  Will have a go making a splint now. I have seperated her from the others and put her in the nursery pen with a couple of 6 week old ducklings for some company. I figured the boys could make things much worse for her! She seems fine in herself - eating, drinking and digging about in the grass.

Good idea to keep the boys away from her.
Yes, I made a body stocking for my cat once and she was out of it before I turned round  ::)
