Storing milk
« on: August 16, 2012, 10:50:52 pm »
I was just wondering what everyone stored their milk in. I need to get something sorted for the stuff we are going to freeze.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

sterilised wine / cider bottles for the fridge (screw top lids)
sterilised plastic milk bottles for the freezer - leave a gap at the top!

or just bags inside a tray til they make a shape that will stack in the freezer, then pile them up...

In the fridge we use innocent orange juice bottles and we bag any milk that we freeze

We get all our neighbours to save their plastic milk containers for us for the freezer, until we buy the cream seperator , then we can make our own cream and butter. :excited:

Ikea sells two-litre juice jugs, which we use for the fridge. For freezer plastic bags in half-cut off 5litre containers (like for cider vinegar). Once frozen bags keep shape. Make sure your bags don't leak - Asda's and Tesco's are bad for it, I use Co-op freezer bags.

Order an ice-cream maker at the same time - you WILL need it.

For the fridge, washed out plastic milk bottles.  I usually leave them in soak overnight with hot water and washing up liquid.

For the freezer, I drink a lot of sparkling water (Tesco Value 19p two litres) and the bottles are ideal for the freezer.  No risk of taste from the previous contents either.

I use those ziplock bag things for the freezer as I had awful leaks in the normal bags, though it seems the problem may be tesco ::)

Thanks for all the ideas

Another question - how long is it okay to store it in the freezer for?

I've stored it for several months quite successfully.  It's useful to have when the yield goes down in the winter.

I bought 2 lidded jugs from Lidl recently, 1.2ltre. very pleased with them, easy to wash.
For the freezer I use sandwich bags in oblong tubs,  icecream tubs or smaller.  when frozen knock out and they stack like bricks. saves space and reuses tubs. sandwich bags seem to leak when thawing, so I make sure they are either put back in the tubs to thaw or in a large jug.

I use 2 x litre fridge jugs (for the skimmed milk - drinking etc); a jug for the cream and freeze the rest in vacuum sealed bags.  Our vacuum sealer was really cheap and is fabulous!
