Google offers different opinions....
Do they need or prefer a saline environment (in which case I'll plant them in containers) or will they be fine in the normal, as-far-inland-as-you-can-get garden?

Well samphire naturally grows in the salt mudflats, pretty wet. Seakale grows a bit further inland and drier. At a guess I'd say seakale will probably manage (and maybe enjoy) ordinary soil, samphire might need saline and a lot of water - but I've only ever picked them at the beach, never grown them in my garden.

I've grown seakale for a few years now in ordinary garden soil, and it seems fine.   :)

That should work.  I would love to grow samphire - haven't had it since I was a child in Norfolk where we used to serve it in vinegar.  Totally delicious  :yum: so please let us know if it's a success.

Yes, please do!  I used to forage for food quite a bit when I lived in Devon - it had never occurred to me I could maybe grow some of those foods in my own garden now I live a long way from such wild delights!
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing
