Wanted: Broken Chest Freezer, Central Scotland
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:24:24 pm »

Bit of a long shot, but you never know!

I'm looking for a broken old chest freezer or possibly even large fridge that I can turn into an insulated compost bin (hey, it's only an experiment, but you never know!). Does anybody have one lying around that they want to see the back of?  - the local tip has loads, but unfortunately aren't allowed to part with them!

If you see the peeps who do the bulky waste collection have a chat with them. It's funny but when I mentioned to them that I was after one, but the tip refused to let them go, a week later one mysteriously appeared at the goats field ;)
Now I have a loverly goat proof feed bin ;D

Now why didn't I think of that?  I spent a fortune on a metal feedbin.

Won't it need some air getting in?  I suspect you'll end up with a load of smelly slime.

Yes absolutely, but I'm sure I can drill a hole or two for that.

Thanks for the hints folks - I'll keep you posted!

Great idea. Only problem long term is leaking refrigerant -the old units have the most destructive type in them which eats the ozone layer faster than anything else. Presumably that's why the tip won't let you have them, and they have a scrap value as well.

I've an old upright fridge/freezer in the garage that technically still works but isn't in the best state in terms of visual appeal so I replaced it and couldn't lift the old one to the tip or pay for it to be taken away so you're welcome to it if you can pick up from North Fife..  I currently have the freezer shelves lifted out and a bag of speedibeet in there but I've another bin it can go in now the feeds have gone down.

Hi Ellied, that's a very kind offer - how far North in North Fife are you, and do you know roughly how big it is?  ;

Thanks!!

Lindores - about 3 miles south of Newburgh and the Tay coast, about 20 mins from Perth/Broxden or an hour from Stirling by the hillfoots road.

I'd say it's 6' tall from a memory guess, but I'll measure it if I remember when I get home
