could it have prolapsed with an egg slightly too large for its immature vent and then the others pecked it ?

apparently not, the vet did a PM on it today and could find nothing!
There was another one in the flock with similar bleeding but still alive so my friend has isolated it.

Could it have been an extreme case of feather pecking.  Rats are also a problem.  Hate it when deaths are unexplained.

In that case you need to try to have them watched - the bully will whittle them down otherwise.  I've had bullying but they never went for the vent - always the head.  I split them into two groups, and again till I found the bully.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age
