Liver fluke in pigs

Hi. You might remember ages ago I asked about vaccinating pigs for liver fluke and there didn't seem to be alot of information ( probably because some areas hardly get it- but liver fluke is quite common in Central and West of Scotland and we had 2 sheep die from it earlier this year).
Anyway, just in case you are interested- our vet recommended that we DO vaccinate the pigs. And also the horse that lives in our field. (The horse next door got it last year)
Of course, you could check for worms first.
If you get a home testing kit, you can request that they test for liver fluke in pigs too.
Although the medicine isn't licenced for pigs, vets do use some of the same products we'd use for sheep(Fasimec Duo we are using) on other animals.
So we are going to attempt to feed it to them, probably in mashed banana, and the dosage is the same- i.e, Lumpy our pig is 45kg, so will get 10ml, the same as a 45kg sheep.
As we already have the medicine for our sheep, we only needed to ask the vet for advice, and that was free. Hurray.
Oh and we'll dose at the same time as the sheep- Sept/Oct, January, April/May.
If you house your pigs inside in the winter you wouldn't need to do it 3 times a year, probably only 2.
I sound like an expert but I'm just repeating my vets advice, so don't ask me anything complicated.
Hope this might be of use to someone.

Thank you Joanne.  That is very useful.

Does anyone else on here vaccinate their pigs?

Wow - 45Kg already  :o You have been spoiling him Joanne  ;) ;D

I'm going to talk to some of my sheep neighbours to see what the fluke situation is here and make sure I get a count done for it on my next worm count. Thanks for the info  :-*
